I capsized my Sunfish just two days ago. Luckily, I had cut up some pieces of pool noodle and attached them to the spars with zip ties. They did what they were supposed to do. My boat didn't turtle.
My mid-60s fish was missing the pin when I got it. I use a stainless 1/4 x 20 bolt and a couple of stainless nuts. Not ideal, but it works. I think that there are some here who can send you a new one.
I converted from the old wooden tiller extension to this 36" one from Intensity Sails:
http://www.intensitysails.com/in36tiexfor4.html
It was listed in the Daysailer section. I just sail recreationally, so the 36" one works fine for me.
I installed a mast cleat. I used #8 (or #10) stainless sheet metal screws. I also used Loc-Tite marine epoxy between the cleat and the mast. Works good so far.
Thanks for the kind words. The hard part of making the video was deciding what to cut out. I wanted it to be less than 10 minutes so I had to leave a lot out. As far as the music, I downloaded three songs from the Youtube Audio Library which has lots of royalty-free music. The three songs are...
Finally finished the video of last week's sail at Mission Bay in San Diego. You'll notice that I got stuck in irons right in the middle of a Laser race. They were able to get around me, though. I consider myself a neophyte. I was basically getting a better feel for how the boat handles and...
As usual I thought of a few good comebacks.......10 minutes later. :)
While viewing the video footage I came across a picture of the Moth. It wasn't on its foils, though. Maybe not enough wind.
Hard woods like ash, oak, and maple are more likely to split when a screw is driven near the end. Soft woods like pine and fir don't usually have this problem. A screw will exert downward pressure via the threads but will also put sideways pressure on the wood because of the width of shaft...
The title pretty much says it all. I live in Riverside and have been taking my Sunfish to Mission Bay in San Diego to sail. I've been looking to expand my horizons. I've noticed that Long Beach has two beach launching ramps available. Has anyone sailed a Sunfish out of Long Beach/Alamitos Bay...
I fabricated a tiller from a piece of oak that I had lying around. I just used the old tiller as a template and used my jig saw. A taper jig on my tablesaw would have been ideal, but I didn't have one. First I put the old tiller extension on and drilled a hole through the end. Then I upgraded to...
I transport my Sunfish in the back of my pickup truck keel down. I made some cradles that match the shape of the hull. I'll have to get some pics of my rolling rig one of these days.
