Class Politics 2011 Rule Changes - Fundamental Rule

Kirby sold a product to GS. Now the value of that product is in question. No surprise that Kirby is backing GS. It is not clear to me why ILCA is backing LP. I'm still undecided. It is very likely that the Laser game will change. Perhaps that is a good thing. Lots of speculation, not enough...

    Laser Trailer Opinions

One more vote for the kitty hawk. They tow great, protect the boat and last forever.

    Southern Cal Sailing

If you are going to be in San Diego on New years day you should join SCRA for their Hangover regatta. http://www.santaclararacing.org/ . We launch from MBYC for the races. MBYC is the best place to launch your laser. If you are there to race access to the club should not be a problem. If you...

    LockPit

I have one, it is OK. With the pro rig the center spar rests on the deck cleats. This is not ideal when towing your boat, but not a issue stored in the yard. If you are in an area where theft is a problem it offers some protection. The mast sections can still be slid out. I have never kept...

    How to get money sailing

You can make money in sailing and you don't have to be "amazing" to do it. Of course being amazing helps. You will need to promote yourself (some of your mistakes in this area have already been discussed) . Approach your reggattas and even your casual trips to sailing venues as professional...

    storage of Laser

I would be worried about the boat falling off of the saw horses during a storm. Particularly if you have a loose fitting cover. Storing the Laser on it's side is one of the best ways to store it. If you can lean it against the garage and it is out of the sun that sounds like a good option to me.

    Draft Stripes

I have them on one of my sails. The previous owner of my boat is a sail maker and he added them. He used a permanent marker (sharpy). I presume he thought they where useful, but they have never been of any use to me. I can say that the sharpy method of installing them seams to have worked...

    Pointing higher?

Can you help me understand? How does easing the vang allow more leach tension? Seams to me the opposite would be true. I can undestnad how easing the cunningham would create more leach tension relative to the belly of the sail, but that is not really what you said. A more basic question is...

strong wind tacking (end up in irons)

Hmm, I do things a bit differently. I try to time it so I tack at the top of a wave so I accelerate down the back of the wave after the tack. Depending on wind and wave direction you will need to adjust your approach. No two situations are the same. When it is windy (over 20 knots). I use...

    Too Old to Start "Lasering"

    Traveller question

Fair enough, Always best to be straight forward. For whatever reason this idea caught my interest. I may play around with it for a few hours one day, or I may not. See you on the water. Oh, and in the spirit of friendly competition Ive been racing lasers a few more years than you :p Jimmy

    Traveller question

Perhaps, but that is a pretty lame view of things. Where is your spirit of adventure and creativity?

    Traveller question

I don't have the rules in front of me, but I think they state that the traveller has to be rigged with a single knot or splice making a simple loop. I bet you could get creative and rig it legally. As for whether or not it would be fast I can't say. I don't think the geometry of the laser...

    Cars that can trailer Lasers

I am also late to the game, but I wanted to add my 2 cents also. I would be more concerned with the brakes than the transmission. Be aware of the max weight capacity of the vehicle. If you exceed that you will likely be exceeding the capabilty of your brakes. The original post mentions that he...

    Stern line for a Laser

I would be concerned about chaffe attaching it to the hiking strap. You might consider lengthening your traveller line and attaching your stern retreival line to the traveller block. You could slack the traveler so that the block hung over the stern of the laser when the boat wast stored. The...

Installing SS antiwear plate in mast step

I took a cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels an put it in the mast tube. Then I dropped the 5200 down the paper towel tube. you don't need much 5200. Combining this method with the long stick method will probalbly work well. You still need to be carefull pulling the paper towel tube out...

    Traveler line ideas

I did whip the three way joint. The tail is burried over a foot. I raced all summer with no problems. I'm in SoCal though, so I never saw that much wind. Jimmy

    Traveler line ideas

Kind of quick and dirty, but maybe it will help. The loop of my splice is the triangle section. The thicker line represents the bury for the splice. To splice spectra you simply insert the entire tail through the line at the desired spot and then a short distance 1/4 inch or so away you insert...

    Traveler line ideas

That picture is not how I did it. The loop of my splice is large and goes through the two fairleads and the traveler block. I will see if I can't do something in MS paint and post a sketch. Jimmy

    Traveler line ideas

Clive said the same thing Goeffs already had, just slightly different wording. Trying to give credit where credit is due. I use spectra and spliced the line rather than using a knot. Spectra splices are easy and it is much easier to make the triangle the desired size with a splice. I have...
