I am considering buying a Capri 14.2 and saw a recent ad for a Mod 2. Setting aside the cost savings on a used boat what do I give up by buying a Mod 2 compared to a later or new model?

Capri/Catalina 14.2
I have sailed small boats and cruising boats all my life but bought a V-15 a few years ago with the idea of using it to teach my grandkids to sail. While I have had fun with the boat it is too quick, wet and unstable for inexperienced sailors. As a result I am considering and...
Patrick.
In thinking further about your comments I have begun to wonder about whether to get the roller furling jib at all. I intend to store the boat on a dock in fresh water and don't plan to class race her. As I said my intention was to leave the furled jib up but even with a cover it may be...
Thanks for your advice and I agree with you as that is the way I handle the sails on my present boat. A roller furled jib however presents some different issues in as much as the boat will stay rigged on the dock at the lake.
Peter
In ordering a new Capri 14.2 the roller furling jib comes with a dark colored leech in lieu of a sail cover. I plan to store my boat on a float all year and am concerned about deterioration of the sail. I have seen a 14.2 with a sleeve as a cover that is raised with a halyard. Do I need one...

I was looking at a Capri 14.2 on the dock and wanted to find out when it was built. I e-mailed the transom plate info to Catalina Customer Service and was able to get the date. The reply came from a Kent Nelson ([email protected]).

Topping Lift
Thanks. That helps as I have never seen one. What is the preferred way to rig a topping lift on a C14.2? Fixed at the top of the mast or fixed at the end of the boom? I can see pluses and minuses with either one.
Peter
Topping Lift
Thanks, George but at the risk of seeming dense I still don't understand what a "Boomkicker" is. I am familiar with a boom crotch, usually a wooden stand on larger boats that supports the boom when the sails are furled but am not sure that's what you mean.
I noted an earlier...
Topping Lift
What is a "Boomkicker"? I am considering putting a topping lift on a new boat as in my experience with other boats it helps when dropping the main and supporting the boat cover when the boat is moored on the dock. Is it commonly done on C14-2's?
Peter
Thanks for the Lake Union suggestion. I'll check it out. I missed one a few weeks ago on Craig's list in the Seattle area. A Capri 14.2 with trailer and outboard for $1000! I was the first caller, didn't go to see it right away and it sold the next day. From the pictures it looked good. Enjoy...
The current MSRP sheet that Catalina sent me lists the centerboard version at $5883. the sheet also lists the various option prices which I can give you if you want them. The local dealer is holding firm on that price.
Peter
Thanks that was a helpful reference. Although they didn't have any price info on recent model Catalinas due to lack of resale activity they did list the 14.2 and I did get pricing guidance for the sale of my 2005 V15.

I am negotiating the purchase of a Catalina 14.2 through a Catalina dealer. When buying a car one is able to find out dealer cost through various consumer sites. Does anything like that exist for boats in general or Catalina in particular?
Peter
Thanks for all of your inputs! I am buying the boat new through the local Catalina dealer who sells few if any 14.2s and maintains no inventory. I have seen one on the dock where I keep my V15 but there is no local fleet so a test drive is unlikely. I feel comfortable with the stability issue...
I am about to buy a 14.2 and am looking for some input on stability and ease of handling. I have sailed a variety of small boats over the years. A few years ago I bought a Vanguard V15 to have a boat small enough to singlehand, able to be pulled up and stored (no trailer!)on a float and...
Capri/Catalina 14.2
Thanks, Rob!
Do you know if Catalina still makes a model called Capri that is just the 14.2 with extra "bells and whistles"? The catalina dealer I talked to said the only Capri made by Catalina is the Capri 22.
