Response to SHNOOL's capsize concern
Sorry SHNOOL to hear about your episode. Seems you're not alone with the " Easy to Capsize" issue. As for me, I will not have to contend with this. I sold my 14.2 and I am done with it I wish you luck on the fair weather days. Just keep that mainsheet...
OK to sail Mr. Hobie
If you sailed a Hobie Cat without any problems, you probably won't have any trouble with the 14.2. Just remain sharp, with mainsheet in hand, especially when the winds pick up. Experience can mitigate risks if you are a seasoned sailor, unless you are lazy like me...
Keep her level
Thanks Maryjane,
I agree with you. You have to be on your toes with the 14.2. However, she acquires speed quickly and demands that you watch where you place your weight. A set of reefing points (4) would do wonders and it would also reduce cockpit tensions.
Thanks and...
Don't tip the Wife
Thanks for you comments, and the suggestion of the Nomad. I think I can still manage a spill or two in the drink while sailing, but my wife would not. Gotta go the stable route. It's a shame, cause I will drop some bucks in the transition.
Happy Sailing......Mooseman
You did nothing wrong tippy
Kentth:
Interesting story. I suspect you did nothing wrong. It is the nature of the boat. I have sailed an ODay 17 in lake Michigan on several occasions with 25 knot winds and 3 -4 foot seas and it remained under control. You know as a sailor, you can adjust...
C 14.2
"Well the big boats may get the glory, but its the small boats make the sailor ".
I'm sure you love your C 14.2. As you say it demands a lot of your attention......
A LOT OF ATTENTION.
I am surprised on how many C-14 owners on this site are unaware of how nice and relaxing it can...
Uninformed
Sorry,
But you are just uninformed. You need to experience other boats with lower capsize ratios, AND you need to read all the capsize and turtle stories posted within your own Association's log.
Have fun, and keep that mainsheet well-in-hand.
Reply to Capsize problem
I have recently tried a Capri 14.2 Mod 3. here in Colorado. Being an experienced sailor of 33 years I know daysailor characteristics, and I immediately identified the 14.2s handicaps. The 62 year old gentleman who provided the C 14.2 demonstration sail claims he will...
The first thing that occurs to any nonsailing person, when looking at sailboat underway, is that it is potentially risky. I have friends who will never join me for a sailboat ride because of the fear that the boat will capsize and toss them into the drink. As sailors, we understand the risks...
Your opinion please,
I have not yet sailed my new 14.2. So, in preparation, I have read owner reviews of the boat to learn about its sailing characteristics. Almost every site I viewed mentioned that the Capri 14.2 is very tender and prone to capsize at winds greater than 10 knots. The...
Cutting Sails ?
Cutting sails, Hmmm.
Not sure this is a good idea.
First, once you reduce the surface area by cutting, you can never get it back. In light air you might miss the extra Sq. footage.
Second, it costs money to modify the sails. Sometimes the modification bill might suggest...
Thanks for beginner's info
Thanks Greg,
Just as I thought, good advise from a fine association. At my age (57) keeping the boat level and flat is fine with me. I'll pull'er over when I get a little more confidence. I've owned everything from a Snark boat to a 25 foot Seaward on Lake...
Hello to all from Colorado,
I am a new owner of a Catalina 14.2, and a new member of your association.
In about a month I will take out my 14.2 for the first time. Although I am an experienced sailor, what would be your advice for a first time user of a Catalina 14.2?
Thanks
