I too have capsized only once, and it was all my fault (a knot on the end of a too short main sheet - that's another story!) I highly recommend a ladder on the stern in case it happens to you, or you what to go for a swim, or pick up someone else in the water.
whisker pole placement on 1st gen Capri Omega
Any guess on what that 3ft distance would equate to on a 1st gen boat w/o a fwd deck? Thanks for any help. Brian
Boarding Ladder
I fully understand how difficult it is to re-enter the boat from the water, or trying to get a swimmer back in. With such a high freeboard, a ladder is a must. Mine is a 2 step folding one that I shortened, and reversed the mounting bracket - I'll try to include a photo. Brian
Centerboard Ramp
My centerboard was also not staying up during our launches - in fact it got stuck several times on the last trailer support member, and was damaged. After I re-fiberglassed my centerboard (old style mahagony) I made this ramp out of a used "plastic" cutting board! It had the...
I'm posting some pics of some mods that my son and I did to our "eBay Omega"!
Beside lots of elbow grease, we added the engine mount for a 2hp Honda long shaft, a ladder (sorely needed after a capsizing, but wasn't installed yet!), a rear light bar / mast holder, and a couple of deck...
Deck Plate idea
I just wanted to thank you for your deck plate idea - I just finished mounting my motor mount on my 1978 Capri, and it was essential that I access the space under the seat to reinforce it. Brian
We are looking for the best motor mount for a long shaft Honda 2hp outboard for our 1978 Omega Capri. I would really appreciate your inputs - I have read through the old postings concerning re-enforcing the transom, and I'm also considering building my own mount. Thanks in advance for any info...
1978 Add'l info
Thanks for the reply - it says all parts are there and it's ready to sail. From your info it seems that if I can get it for around $300-$400, it would be a good buy. My son has already said that he would clean it up! Thanks again for your thoughts, and I'll look into the...
1978 info
Thanks for the reply Richard, I appreciate your thoughts on this boat. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words, and since I don't type very fast, I'll try this link to ebay were I found it...
My son (13) and I are a considering a 1978 Catalina Capri - could any one tell this newby if I should even consider this boat? We are looking for a sailboat to learn on, maybe sail in the Puget Sound area if we become proficient enough! Thanks for your thoughts. Brian
