    $25 Sunfish-It's true! I'll Prove It!

I sold the Sunfish for $1,550. I had spent about $900 on top of the original $25 I paid for boat and trailer so I cleared a little profit. With the money I bought a brand new 6hp Nissan long shaft outboard motor. Why? For my 1978 Pearson 26 One Design sailboat I found on Craigslist for $1,000...

    $25 Sunfish-It's true! I'll Prove It!

I got the aluminum rub rail at Lowes. It's 3/8" glass channel and comes in 8 foot sticks. I heated the channel to make the bends around corners. Still had to crimp the channel a little where it tried to flair at the bends. Easy to do and much cheaper than the original stuff which is way too...

    Pointing and Gooseneck Position

Why does it matter which side of mast the sail is on? Is it reletive to where the fairlead is located?

    Pointing and Gooseneck Position

The following is from http://www.sunfishsailboats.com/tuning_guide.pdf In general, the lighter the wind and the flatter the water, the farther forward the gooseneck. Having the gooseneck at 17 inches in these conditions will help pointing. As the wind picks up and the waves increase in size...

    Bailer installation...doesn't look right

I see...so...the new bailer isn't supposed to fit flush. Hummm...wonder why the old one did? Also wondering why only hand tight. Originally I installed it "hand tight" and it wasn't tight enough to keep it properly positioned, so I cranked it down a bit with a 6 foot pipe wrench. Too tight now? Why?

    Bailer installation...doesn't look right

What I've seen indicates there is only one style bailer now. The "old style" bailer is no longer available.

    Buying an Old Sunfish

Don't get caught up thinking you can't get the boat dried out. Mine had no inspection ports when I bought it. I installed three, one bow, one behind the splash rail and one at the stern. I vaccuumed a bunch of water out with a wet-vac and then using a box fan and dryer duct (connected duct to...

    Bailer installation...doesn't look right

The old bailer fit flush. That's why I was wondering about the new one fitting weird.

    Bailer installation...doesn't look right

I bought a new bailer assembly but it doesn't fit completely flush with the hull. No matter how I attempt it, I can't make the thing fit flush. It seems the o-ring is keeping it from happening. I've thought of ditching the o-ring and using clear silicone all around the main body. I would...

    $25 Sunfish-It's true! I'll Prove It!

Messing around in the garage today, I made something to carry the mast roll while trailering. The stern mount is not real easy to see. I Made a "T" with some 1 1/2" pine and mounted two 2" corner brackets. It attaches to the rudder mount using 5/16 bolts through the corner brackets and big wing...

    This ain't sailing weather!

I'm starting to get a little pissy about the weather here. Now we are having these random thunderstorms kicking up. The storms that killed all the people in the south started hear and traveled all the way to the east coast. They began about 40 miles south of Dallas. We are supposed to have...

    Lower boom (spar) height

When I took it out the first time I set it up according to the "Sunfish Rigging Guide" which I believe is for a racing set up. It sailed fine, even though it was windy as hell that day. I'll bet I got boomed in the head a half dozen times. It seems though, that I read somewhere, that setting the...

    Lower boom (spar) height

For the purpose of maximum clearance (headroom) at what point is too high to rig the sailplan. Let's base it on distance between deck and gooseneck. I've seen pictures that appear to be between two and three feet between deck and gooseneck. Thanks for your answers.

    Mast Cleat Installation

I was thinking aluminum pop rivets would hold just fine. I've heard mixing stainless with aluminum sets off some kind of reaction that over time ruins the integrity of the mechanical attachment.

    Recommendation on Rigging Lines, etc.

I did buy a block, not the ratchet type..just a plain style and included the spring to make it stand up. I didn't like the way it worked with the spring so I removed the spring. I'm not sure why the spring is needed. Maybe just to keep the block from scratching the area around it when it flops...

    Recommendation on Rigging Lines, etc.

Hey Minas man...I read where you advised a cleat on the mast for the halyard to relieve the strain on the deck...Seems to me the fairlead and deck cleat setup is what keeps the sailplan attched to the boat in a knockdown. It is early and I'm not sure I am fully awake yet...but...am I missing...

    Hello Everyone!

My wife knows I've been watching the ads for a boat for several months. I'm looking for something in the mid 30 foot range. So...a couple months ago while checking the listings, I saw an ad on craigslist for a Sunfish for $25. I called and sure enough...boat trailer and all the pieces in tact. I...

New Member, New Owner, New Project

Hi Clem, I just finished an 81 sunfish. I cut three ports in mine. I took a cheap box fan, duct taped a plastic yard bag to it and then attached a piece of flexible dryer pipe to the bag. Presto turbo dryer. I taped the duct into the stern port and opened the bow port. The boat dried in about a...
