    Sailorchick - I am less worried about the wear on the mast than I am about my worn mast step - I am assuming (maybe wrongly) that if I tape the mast with something suitably slippy it will wear the maststep less

    thanks for the detailed replies since my original post I have now had a looky and found wear through the gelcoat at the top of the maststep where it loads up against the spar i intend to layer / sand / layer /sand etc etc with gelcoat - maybe a few coats to build up a decent layer havent...

    Further to last post have now examined my mast step after a thorough clean It does not leak Its worn through the gelcoat at the top and about three inches into the hole What is the best way of repairing this? I am considering using layers of gelcoat repair sanded in between each coat...
