Thanks all for the advice and wisdom of your experience! I'm going to have a friend evaluate it and make a plan from there. Of course if the wind starts blowing it's going in he water!
Minifish what's a glaze?
Thanks!
So if you put gel coat over the boat it would protect and seal it but it would still have the oxidized color? Does a good marine paint offer the boat anymore protection? Thanks.
I've read a number of threads on this forum about painting a Sunfish and have learned quite a bit. I was wondering if after you've painted your fish do you then apply a coat of gel coat? Could you mix the gel coat with the paint and apply it that way?
Thanks!
I've got a 1970 Sunfish that I think I'll be replacing the bailer on. Is there an advantage to going to the new style bailer? I understand it's plastic which concerns me with beach landings and overall durability. Thanks!
Seems as if I'm missing an important component to my self bailer. Shouldn't this have some sort of cap to it? When I'm sailing it's fine, when I stop for any reason the cockpit fills with water.
The top part of my centerboard, where you grab it, has come almost free. The screws that hold it in place have worn a hole to the end of the board. Is there anything wrong with taking some marine epoxy and gluing those two pieces together? Thanks!
The brass fitting that connects to the traveler caused me a problem in my boat. About every 3rd time I changed directions with the rudder it would clip the fitting and open it up. Which would free the line enabling the boom to do what it wanted. I replaced mine but perhaps someone on this forum...
New idea! I could just build a little statue in the cockpit.
Actually it's facing sideways so no real show going on. Thanks for the part number I think I'll give that a try.
Thanks for the advice!
I'm the proud new owner of a 1970's vintage Sunfish. It's got the old style rudder and what I've been told is the old style self bailing cock pit. The only problem with the self bailing cock pit is that the part that's under water is facing the wrong way. Is this worth fixing? I've been told by...
About 100. I be over to pick them up later! :) I just paid 600. for a working sunfish. It's got a few issues but I sailed it yesterday. Trailers are a bit of a premium.
Thanks for all the replies! I don't think racing is in her future, but you never know. I just want her to have an appreciation for sailing. You've all confirmed what I thought was true. So unless I get a really good deal on a Laser it will be a Sunfish.
Cheers!
Mike
Hello and thanks for reading and hopefully responding to this thread. I plan to teach my daughter to sail a bit this summer and was wondering if there's a big difference between the Laser and the Sunfish. I suspect the Laser is a bit faster then the Sunfish but from a learning perspective is it...
