the rudder on my (new) '73 is difficult to move up and down. I'm concerned that is won't flip upon coming ashore. It is common to lube the wood where its screwed in replace. If so what do you recommend to use?

I've got to make a 10 mile ride with my fish and will be placing it on the racks of top of my 95 Volvo station. I'd appreciate and tips for securing it. What to use, where/how to tie down etc. I don't want to take out the guy driving behind me! Thanks.
