There is much talk of how many courses there will be in Halifax. The rumour is that there will be one for the Radials and one for the Full Rigs. Does anyone have an official word on this?
I heard a rumor that there are guys well over 180lbs that plan to sail the Radial rig at the Masters in Halifax. Doesn't that smack of unsportsmanlike behaviour? I mean, come on, they have an alternative. If they can't handle the Full Rig when they weigh above 180lbs, maybe they shouldn't be...
Anyone know where to find the spreadsheet someone took so much time to put together that showed sale prices of lasers over the years? There were two sheets as I recall, that, combined, would give you a good indication of the price of a used laser by year and sail number. It's out there in...
Canadian sailors:
In the absence of a real Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame, it's time we came together to nominate our choices for who would should be in it...if there was one. (The rest of the world, stop laughing. We really do have some great sailors).
I will start the nomination process...
Ryan Minth mentioned to me once there was someone in New Jersey that refinished centerboards and rudders that did a greate job. Anyone know who that might be? The word "Gunk" came up, like the name of the company was something like that. Anyone?
This is all about windward heel upwind in light air again. When you've got it right, the helm sits to lee of centre about 1 1/2"to 2". There is no pressure on the helm. you can let go of the tiller and it will stay there.
Question: If that is the case, then do you have lee helm? Lee helm, as...
After one sail, my lower spar is bent and I am talking with Vanguard about it now. To my amazement, there is a chance that I won't get a new spar to replace this one. I am being told the spar has to be tested and if it passes, it's my spar. Bent or not, it won't get replaced. After one outing...
Well, maybe. Not exactly, but I looked at the current ISAF rankings and Canada has more sailors ranking 100 or better than any other country. It leads with 11, USA has 10, Great Britian counts eight and Australia have five.
Not bad for a country with 10 months of ice, and 2 months of slush.
I picked up my new boat and headed to Westport Conn. to sail in the Sunday racing at Cedar Point Yacht Club. Not only was the fleet big, the competition was solid and the wind was up. I sailed the course like a scalded cat thinking, "one day there will be a scratch on this boat, but not today...
Last year, Masters were treated to a two week circuit that started with the Florida Masters at West Palm and Midweek Madness at Jensen Beach in the week following. The Master Mids followed that, then the Open Mids.
This year, the Master Mid dates are set, as are the Open Mids. Does anyone...
I am picking up my new boat from Colie Sails in NJ on Oct. 14. I have a day before I have to head back to Toronto and was hoping someone knew of a race near Colie (2 hours drive, maybe?) that I could hook up with. Let me know.
Thanks.
here's a rules question regarding obstructions. You are on port tack. There is a boat just to leeward, say -- three feet -- and you are bow to bow. He is pointing higher than you for whatever reason and the only way to keep clear of him is to tack or luff and let him pass ahead of you. But you...
Well. I've done it. Booked the vacation time, convinced the wife, made my deals with God -- I am going to my first Midwinters. Can anyone help me with info on conditions: wind, tide, best side of the course, all that good stuff? I have never sailed in the Gulf. Never sailed in Florida, in fact...
I recently read a story where Bernie Luttmer, Canadian Olympic rep was quoted saying he considered himself a downwind specialist. It got me thinking; will a downwind specialist ever be able to win against an upwind specialist in this class? Is there enough play in downwind speed to make up for...
In one of the last races of the year, one of the competitors said that new rule changes were going to restrict boats from coming to the top mark on port within the boat length overlap limit. The inference was that boats coming in on port would actually have to bear off to below two boat lengths...
I notice a thread on cold weather boots. How about gloves that are waterproof and relatively warm for sailing in cold weather? Anyone know of one? I was at the Mountain Co-op in Toronto to look at their gloves and there was a good selection of gloves, all pretty cheap, but none that were...
Recently in a light-air frostbite, I was one of three lasers sailing dead downwind abreast two-to-three boat lengths behind the race leader. I fully expected the leader to come to a dead stop for all the blanketing he was receiving from the three of us, but quite the contrary, he pulled away a...
My employer is willing to provide sponsorship money to me personally, as opposed to sponsorship of a regatta or event. Can I carry the corporate logo on my sail? Can I give my Laser a name that endorses the company? The rule book as I read it seems to deal only with event sponsorship.
