    removable splash rail??

Ego congruo. Commodo dico mihi: First I hope Molly is Italian or a Latin scholar and not "just" a lawyer otherwise I just typed jibberish, but also I'm unable to differenciate facetiousness (or is it sarcasm?) from real advise (though either one is fine with me . . . my question was written in...

    Cutting out inside filling foam

Just an aside on the slip rental comment. I understand the storage dilema! Transport is a bit easier managed, but still the idea of keeping the boat where you'll use it is great. A lot of wear and tear comes from moving these "foam sandwich" boats around. I think the humor you've...

    removable splash rail??

I'd thought about that. I wonder how large a wave it would take to pull the splashrail off . . . I guess I could tie a lanyard to something . . . ("no, you have it backwards: the daggerboard is holding the splashrail on") And I've been saving my official Sunfish Parts bags for just such an...

    removable splash rail??

I removed the splashrail on my '66 Fish during a deck refitting, and most of the old brass inserts were loose/leaking. I sealed them "temporarily" so I could get back on the water, leaving the rail off. I've researched repair techniques and had planned it as part of my winter refit, but I have...

    What hardware for sheet control?

This is more of a humble question than an opinion: I've sailed for years with a center mounted block/cam cleat in some pretty heavy winds while spread-eagle hiking and never had a problem capsizing from a stuck sheet. Granted, I don't think I ever intentionally cleated the sheet under those...

Thanks Foxy. For me sailboat ownership is partially an excuse to tinker, and learn new skills. Although I appreciate honest warnings, I also don't subscribe to the view that certain skills (like sailmaking) are above and beyond the normal human's ability. Yes, I know experience is needed to...

    hiking strap on '66 fish

thanks again, Dphoye. Your explanation of the strength near the bottom corner made perfect sense.

    hiking strap on '66 fish

Oh, by the way, I asked the same question on the Yahoo! group, and anyone interested can check out that thread as well . . . basically same ideas though

    hiking strap on '66 fish

yah, I've tried the fore and aft foot hook too, not very comfortable, especially in any waves! The strap is more forgiving. The "both ends low + bungie" seems logical, especially since it's the fore end of the strap that needs to be accessable.

    hiking strap on '66 fish

oh, thanks Dphoye, I responded to Fred and didn't acknowledge your response to my original question! I realize the need for the inspection port, and your suggestion to mount just under makes sense, that's pretty much what I'm planning. I just wondered if mounting the aft end low was a function...

    hiking strap on '66 fish

Sure, height makes a difference, and before the strap was class legal (and now standard on a new boat), various "hook your feet" methods were used. The strap is much more comfortable, and if you consider that your feet are at the center of the footwell with a strap, those few inches can make a...

I have a barely used 10 yr old class legal recreational sail. I'm not planning on any serious racing (I don't even know of any other 'fish in the area) but I do plan to set my sail low even when sailing for fun. $386 for a new racing sale is not an option, and my old sail has plenty of life...

    hiking strap on '66 fish

I'm installing a hiking strap on my '66 Sunfish. All of the diagrams I've found show the aft mounting on the lip of the storage compartment, which I don't have. I've never seen any measurements (or discussions about them) for how high the front of the strap should be mounted either, just rough...
