Southern Cal Sailing

I will be making a trip to Southern California in the coming weeks and hoping to bring my Laser along. We haven't finalized where exactly (could be OC area, San Diego, MDR).

My question is what area has the best public access for launching a Laser? Any good (read as safe) locations to beach launch?

Well now I know for certain where I am headed in So Cal....going to San Diego. So with this more specific location is there any advice on a good launching area?

Try going to that district web site and see if someone can get you a couple of day passes to a local club.

Mission Bay often has wind, when the ocean is near calm - and the "marine layer" aka fog usually burns off over the bay long before it does over the ocean.

San Diego harbor around SDYC and South Bay are both interesting spots to check out as well, and sailing out past Pt Loma into the Pacific is worth it for the various sights alone (when there is wind)

If you are going to be in San Diego on New years day you should join SCRA for their Hangover regatta.

MBYC is the best place to launch your laser. If you are there to race access to the club should not be a problem. If you can't get access to the club you can launch from the beach just outside the club (Santa Clara Dr), or if you prefer a concrete launch ramp the South Shores launch area off Sea World Drive would work.

Google turned up this: http://www.sdboating.com/ramps.htm. I would stick with Mission Bay for a laser. Any of the launch ramps in mission bay would work. San Diego Bay is nice, but you get a lot of big boat traffic, so it is not as conducive to dingy sailing.

I will indeed be in San Diego on New Year's weekend but don't have my class legal sail yet...so no regatta's for me until then.
