Hiking Pants

I hope I posted this in the right place...

I have never used hiking pants in my life and am considering purchasing a pair. My primary concern is warmth. I usually sail in the summertime off the coast of North Carolina and I know that hiking pants can be very uncomfortable in warm conditions. I am looking for a pair of hiking pants that will not keep me too uncomfortably warm but will provide adequate support while hiking.

Thanks!

Zhik has a product called Powerpads that can be used without the whole "hiking pants" thingy. Its not cheap, an you do still have to wear something over them to protect them, but its a good alternative in the heat.

Would boardshorts protect them well enough?

I've got the Zhik powerpads with microfleece shorts and they weren't hot during a Western Australian summer. If you want to go even cooler go for the Zhik Hybrid Gear, or just the pads with lycra shorts, but the Zhik gear is expensive however it is great stuff
