Tiller Question

I have broken the nylon/plastic end off of my alloy tiller extension (the sort that fits into a metal joint).

Is there any way of fitting a new rubber universal joint to this old style alloy tiller and extension or do i just have to buy a new one?

Or, can i get a new nylon fitting for the extension somewhere?

Your help is appreciated.

Nick.

If I understand you question correctly, you broke the "hand" end of the tiller extension, making it uncomfortable.

While you're fixing it, you're wondering if you can replace the "universal joint" end that connects it to the tiller extension.

Answer: I know of no way to replace that old-style universal joint with the new modern style synthetic/rubber one.

As far as the "hand end" of the tiller extension goes, just take the thing down to the local hardware store and see what you can find that will fit.

Firstly, thanks for your comments.

New tillers are about £70 upwards.

No sorry, i didn't make myself clear. I broke the plastic/nylon end off of the tiller extension. This end has a hole through it. The end fits into a metal joint on the tiller and is secured with a pin.

Ok, thanks. I'm thinking that i might saw off the end of the tiller extension taking the broken end with it and then try to fit the universal joint to the newly cut tube of the tiller extension.

Does anyone know if it is possible to fit a universal joint (new rubber type) to and older style alloy tiller?

I don't see why it wouldn't be (possible).

You'll be left with a bit of a short tiller extension, though.

If you've broken the end off flush you should still be able to get it out. Drill the retaining rivet out. Then drill a hole in the end from the end of the tube and put a screw in it - then pull the bit of plastic out.

If that fails you could drill it out - or even melt it - or make a hole at the handle end and tap it out.
