Recently got a sunfish and I have a few questions. It is in 'fair' shape. no leaks or major visible damage. I spent about ten hours on it over the 4th .

1. Can I replace the sail clips with line. Is their a benefit to either one?

2. Do all of you recommend inspection ports. I guess I need to since it has no hiking strap and I would like to install one.

thanks in advance and thanks for a great site!

Sure, line slides a little easier on the spars when you rig your boat with adjustable outhaul and cunningham. If you really know your sail well, it also allows you adjustability to fine tune sail shape as you tie each cringle individually.

For my part, only as needed for repair, keeping the hull ventilated and dry, and extra storage ... in that order. There's no sense to making swiss cheese of your hull without good cause.

I concur with Wayne, My SF came with ties and though it takes a little while to tie each one on, the benefit is that you can ensure that the designed cut of the foot and luff are unaltered by being pulled too tight in one place and too loose in another. As for inspection ports, I'm finding through this forum that they are a necessary evil, seems nothing can be done without creating another inspection port. Thank god they aren't required below the waterline.

What are the advantages to the super fish.

The Super Sunfish was an option offered for a few years (late 70's or 80's not sure exactly when). It had a rig similar to a laser and a few extra deck cleats and a traveler in the cockpit. The Super Sunfish is faster than a regular sunfish with a lateen sail.

The last statement may have been true in the seventies when the Super rig was an available option, but it isn't true anymore.

Portsmouth handicaps (2008)
  • Super Sunfish 100.7
  • Sunfish 99.6 (lower is faster)

The Super rig does give a completely different feel to the boat and is fun to play with.
