just wondering which order u guys and girls adjust your settings when coming into and around the top mark.

well, i first ensure that my main isnt tangled, then outhaul and vang just before mark, vang as i go around (a little earlier when its heavy) and then board once im settled (good spot, no one sailing over the top of me)

If the breeze is on, the vang is usually the first thing off at or before the mark -- this eases tension on the rig as you ease sheet and reduces the chance the boom will dip into the water. The cunningham is a close second, don't go too long with an eased vang and a tight cunn. (deathroll)

If its light, you are probably sailing with a pretty loose vang, and the cunningham would be the most important first tug.

Either of these to adjustments can be made smoothly joined in with a tug up on the board.

The outhaul should be the last of your concerns. Ease cunn & vang, sail fast and then maybe think about easing outhaul.

Hey alloy, are you from NS?

I think their from Queensland Austrailia, not our Queensland.

I do my vang C-ham before I go around the mark, and depending on the conditions sometimes my board. Outhaul is last for me.

ive found that having the outhaul off while rounding gives you alot of power when you accelerate downwind, so i adjust it before the mark

I use the old style systems so i must release vang first, before the mark, then after rounding i release it more, otherwise i cannot get it off. after the first release of the vang, i let the outhaul off it the race is long enough. then cunny while i am rouding, finally, centerboard.

yea i'm from asutralia,

ive actually found that if u give a luttle roll jybe at the top mark and while the boom is overhead u let off the cunno and outhaul(release the vang b4 the top mark) u actually get a lot of speed out of it compared to just roll jybing at the top mark.

ps very hard but very worth it ive found

i think you should always concentrate on getting yourself planing first before donig anything else. some people loose positions because they are so preoccupied with sail settings after rounding that the guy behind them just catches a wave and zooms straight in front.

trhats what i do i have actually ben getting a friend to film my top mark roundinds and i make up about 4 or 5 boats in a close race

A few years ago, racing in a state title Chris Murphy's home waters, I watched a 3 time world Masters champ roll in to windward in about 8 knots, while trying to ease his outhaul.

After seeing that, mine stayed where it was throughout the racing from then on, and the speed certainly didn't suffer. That's for a Radial, where most info I have says there's only really one fast outhaul setting anyway.

So for me, sort out mainsheet like Chris says, hit vang just before mark, CB at mark if it's windy, stuff the rest until I'm going fast and have a chance to get at them when convenient.

lol, yeah but adam does that often....

in 8 knots outhaul doesnt make a huge difference

in 12+ it does because you would usually have a fair bit of outhaul on going upwind and the sail would be too flat for running

Yeah, I'm not sure. Reaching was my slowest point of sail in Radials, but it may have been due to under-trimming rather than lack of outhaul adjustment. I'm getting a good old boat (55 series, which means I won't get too serious and tense) shortly for some fun racing and I'll experiment then.

Regardless, I know you can beat Adam without easing the outhaul mid-race, and for the bit of coaching I'm doing, I'm telling people to forget it and worry about getting the important things (handling, hiking, trimming, vang, etc) right first.

I agree with MScott, Because the adjustments made depend on the wind. You'll easily loose control if you loose C-ham and outhaul first, before the topmark in heavy airs. Otherwise, when in light airs You'll have to need the power to reach in the first meters after the mark.
