Rudder Downhauls

My ridder downhaul is a pain in the arse, infact, its pointless in terms of 'ajusting' the rudder from beavertailed to the vertical position. i hav to push down the blade manualy. i got this....

"...1/8" Spectra is best for the downhaul, lead it up over the top front cross pin and out the back of the tiller slot, where it makes a 180 degree turn and comes forward along the tiller with a purchase loop before the cleat. Doing this keeps it from rubbing on the deck. ...."

from a site, and i dont quite understand it. i think i need a purchase (what, by the way, is legal and illegal), so could someone, or two, or three, run me through the process of rigging one?

much appreciated,

p.s. wouldnt it ware down the line alot where it 'makes the 180 degree turn'

i wouldnt say 'easy'.. i hav alot of trouble with mine "i hav to push down the blade manualy"... what tiller do you havm the one that comes with the boat or a carbon fiber 1?

i have a carbon one but it doesnt really make a difference does it? usualy it stays up for launching the boat and then i just give a good tug on the downhaul and it falls down. the biggest problem i have is it doesnt stay in the cleat very well so i have tie knots and stuff!

purchase on a rudder?

i mean, you arent allowed to raise it while racing so haveing all that rope there just so you dont have to reach back ang push it down is kinda pointless?

maybe we can incorporate a centreboard purchase system into the vang just to make it easier around the top mark?

I thought the same Murphs, but then someone at my club said the purchases help with holding the rudder down, rather than making it easier to pull down. I tried it with mine and with no purchases when it was tied down, I could certainly pull the rudder back 5-10mm. Whether it does this when sailing or makes much difference I don't know, but putting in purchases makes it locked down tighter.

i use a purchase, basically because, no matter what kind of line you use, it will have stretch. the extra tension on the line caused byt the purchase will ensure that your rudder stays fully down the whole race. also prevents alot of stress on the tiller because force on the rudder decreases.

What extra line ? When the rudder is up, the line only just reaches on to the back of the transom - just enough to get hold of. When I push the rudder down and pull the line tight, there's just enough to do a few turns around the cleat and tie off.

o, alright. does anyone hav the problem thattheur downhaul rubs on their transom? i might have to rig some sourt of line direstor to lift it off the transom
