Draft Stripes

Did it to mine, and have them for my other boats. Love em. Draft stripes seriously need to be added to the class rules.

Ross…I see that you have placed the stripe-ends at each 1/3 on the luff and leach. Do you effectively use all three stripes?

What material did you use for the stripes? Aftermarket sailtape? Wonder if the stripes will stay on my old training sail. Hmmm..I don’t think so.

Maybe I should get a new training sail in the process and have the sail maker add them?

Who’s the best sail maker for trainings sails - must ship internationally?

Martin,

Any vinyl tape (i.e. - electrical tape) should work just fine. As for it sticking to your sail, it has more to do with the stickiness of the tape than the "stickability" of the sail. ;)

I am very curious if people feel that this would be an unfair advantage in a club race. They are great for seeing the shape of the sail more clearly. So please sound off as to how you would feel if someone else had the draft stripes and you did not and they beat you.

Thanks.

The 8.1 sail that Rooster makes comes with a draft strip about 2/3rd of the way up. The trick to getting the best out of the sail is to match this to the foot and keep the leech tell tales flying.

I am finally getting the hang of this but it takes practice.

On a standard sail you could just add tell tales in the relecant places as I believe camber lines are not in the class rules... I am sure AlanD will chip in if he reads the thread....

I personally wouldn’t care...if you don’t already know to read your sail and its draft...it doesn’t matter anyway. Its just a tool to make viewing easier….now I wont have to move around in the boat in different angels to get the same information.

As you have probably noticed I have just purchased two sails from Intensity this morning. Would it be possible for Intensity to add these draft stripes in both sails? I would be much appreciated.

BTW...For camber I don’t use telltales Jeffers and don’t see how you can compensate and/or compare with using telltales? Camber and max power-zone/height is two different things in my book? Did I misunderstand your input?

I'm going to put stripes on one of my old sails today and see how I like it!! Thanks for the idea!!!!

Granted that we're mostly talking about practice sails here, so ther rules don't really apply.

Yes I use them all.

Just took it to Ullman Sails.

I have them on one of my sails. The previous owner of my boat is a sail maker and he added them. He used a permanent marker (sharpy). I presume he thought they where useful, but they have never been of any use to me.

I can say that the sharpy method of installing them seams to have worked well. The sail is several years old and the lines are still clearly visable.
