Sailing plans for 2009

So whats everyones plans/aims for there sailing in 2009?

I'm planning on attending Hoorn Europa Cup, UK Nationals and rankers and the UK South coast series.

I'm also aiming to get as much training time in as possible. My starts are poor but hope to remedy that this year.

I plan on presenting as many opportunites as I can to get my wife into sailing. I couldn't convince her that she needed a boat, but I did convince her that I needed a second boat. The plan is to have a couple weeks up at the lakes and get her hooked...

It might work, might not...

My plans are as follows:

1)- Get back in shape and dump the 15 lbs that I gain every winter, (I've been doing this the past 3 years so nothing new there. Once you turn the corner on 40 EVERYTHING seems to "Stick" more).

2)- Get intense on training in my boat during the next 3 cold months.

3)- Sail in our Districts first 2 events as warm ups for the.....

4)- Masters NA's in May.

5)- Defend my July Charleston win.

6)- Finish out the year with 1 or 2 more events.

7)- I was hoping to do the Worlds, but had to bail. I can't commit the time for it, (2 weeks).

This past year, after March, I stuck to home and sailed every chance I got at my club. I got in a lot of sailing and improved my game.

This year, I'm administering and teaching at my club's Learn to Sail program, so I don't know if I'll get to race much at all. Figure I might be "sailed out," but maybe that is not possible.

Well, this being my first year back in the boat and first year sailing in the UK (also an old guy, although Master does sound much better!), I plan to attend as many Masters regattas as I can leading up to the Masters Worlds in Nova Scotia, including the European Masters in Spain. I am looking forward to meeting lots of new people here in the UK and around Europe.

As a reformed windsurfer and former part time sailor, who never raced, I am just getting into the Laser thing. I'm also an old guy, so I went with a Radial. My goals are to get out on the water as much as I can (the weather around Puget Sound has been awful ever since I bought the boat) and once I can sail around with out embarassing myself do some low key club racing.

I am hoping to do the UK qualifiers and nationals as well sailor chick....see you there! It's my first year of doing the whole circuit as it's the first year I can afford to and I am sure I will be propping up the fleet. Also the Home Counties and Eastern circuit (though i wish there was less inland stuff on this circuit)
As for training, I'm looking to change my job when the economy improves to live more coastal purely because i love it. Am i stupid?

I'm doing the qualifiers on the UK circuit too. Lasereng and Sailor chick. Where do most ppl stay for the qualifiers as its a bit cold for camping in march!?!? caravsn are well expensive too :(

While I'm still in the UK i'm aiming to win a few GP events, especially the one at my home club, which I somehow seem to always stuff up!

After August, when I migrate back to NZ, if I've taken my boat with me it'll be train, train, train, and then try my luck for the NZ nationals. If I cant afford to take my boat it'll be more like work, work, work, and buy a laser!

Either way there's a lot of training involved, not so much in the boat, just getting properly race fit again - I'm eligible for Masters stuff, and like Rob B said, things just seem to stick these days!

I used to do the Home Counties circuit Lasereng, there a good friendly bunch, I just wish they supported the radials better. You're not studid wanting to change jobs and move to the coast - I did it about 3 years ago and one of the best decisions I ever made.

As for accommodation keen been, I usually end up sleeping in the car when a qualifier is too far from home. Thankfully Stokes is close enough I get to sleep in my own bed.

I am the same lasereng I changed my job to life closer to the coast. i took a big pay cut but just happy to be here for my laser sailing. go for it mate, shame about economy though!
Ok sailor chick, any other tips aside from sleeping in the car? do most ppl camp? surely not in march?

Hoping to sail some nice races in holland with the radial, including the europacup @hoorn. The europacup @nieuwpoort, afterwards some training with the standard sail and hopefully compete in the european standard championship in sweden, also a few trainingweeks in france and holland are already planned.

Local B&B's, youth hostel, friends and families sofa's... Team up with other people to share a caravan - we got 6 of us in a caravan near paignton last year which worked out reasonable price.

I'm hoping to do all 6 UK Q events, and to end the year ranked in the top 30 (currently 11 places behind sailorchick, so i'd have to overtake her :p). Also want to actually qualify for at least one GP circuit, never finish outside the top 5 and win 3 events - so far I've been picking and choosing far too much and have ended up with 3/4 results in 2-3 circuits.

Also might do sail for gold (have to be full rig rather than radial), depending on if I'm feeling heavy or not.

Quite like the idea of the Europa Cup, but got to save my holiday days for a honeymoon next year!

Not necessarily stupid - but I went for the other approach of not living by coast but making sure that my job pays well enough so that I can afford to put lots of miles on the car. It has *just* about worked out that way!

If you can buy a big old cheap van that you can kit out you're in the money! Fuel economy can be crappy though, so you need to take it into consideration.

I'm finding it very interesting how many responders to this thread are not in the US. Do our US sailors have no plans for 2009 or just not read the Forum or just not care???????

Way too many but here are some big ones.

NA's up at Buffalo Canoe Club
District 10 champs
Orange Coffee Pot
May's month of Saturday laser regattas in District 10
ACC's @ SSA (maybe radials as well)
Nationals @ Brant Beach Yacht Club (home club)

Probably a few more in there as well.

Well I'm from the US. I'm not confident that I'll actually get to race in any regattas, but for the remainder of the winter I'll continue sailing every Sunday in Newport Harbor with Fleet 413.

After that, so long as the owner doesn't demand his boat back, I'll be driving it like I stole it whenever I have the spare time.

Maybe Buzzard's Bay Regatta? Maybe Newport Regatta? Racing the Laser is substantially more inexpensive than pushing the J24 around the course with a full bus.

Step 1: Find a new job since my company went kaput 2 weeks before Christmas
Step 2: Do some sailing... try not to get the mainsheet caught on the transom as much.

Sux about your job... Maybe you can change the order of your steps to give you some thinking time about your career change.

There's no laser dealers in the midwest, maybe that's my calling :) I'll have to sail on it.

2009 Plans:
  • I plan to spend as much time as possible in my Laser - mostly weekends
  • I plan to spend as much of that time as possible with my son (in his Sunfish)
  • I plan to crew on a Catalina 22 for weekly local regattas thru March
  • I plan to start racing in the Laser (YC weekly) starting in April
  • Hoping to participate in more training programs at the YC in Spring/Summer
In short, I have lots of plans - we'll see what happens!

:):eek::confused::rolleyes::cool:;):D

How about busy and just didn't see it until now?

Sailing locally once a week through the end of January and when there are no regattas to go to.
Florida Masters, Palm Beach in Feb.
Masters Midwinter's East Sarasota in Feb.
MYC Spring Regatta in April
Master's North Americans, Wrigthsville Beach in May
Master's Gulf Coast in July.
All of the Treasure Coast Series which is once a month all summer.
MYC Fall regatta in October
D13 Championships in December
Probably 2-3 other regattas somewhere.

Also will be PRO for 3 regattas and umpiring a match racing regatta this year.

I'll be doing a lot of what Foxy is doing since we're in the same district.:) Also add open MWE in Clearwater in Feb and trying to get as in shape as possible for the Masters Worlds at the end of summer. And trying to find a way to get self and boat up to Nova Scotia on the cheap!

Sailing plans for 2009:

Laser: Go to Antigua for a week http://www.sunsail.co.uk/clubs/destinations/colonna :) (not just Laser, will play with other kit too!).
Take part in as many races as I can at my local club www.rwsabc.com where my 2 ambitions are firstly to complete the course (at the moment I follow everyone round and retire a lap early) and secondly to NOT FINISH LAST (just once would be nice :D).

Benetteau Evasion 30: My pal's ketch Enigma. Plans for this year are a trip from Largs to N. Ireland (overnight at Sanda) and a circumnavigation of Kintyre (out via Crinan Canal, return by Mull of Kintyre).

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 43: Sandpiper, a charter yacht from Isle of Skye Yachts. A week of sailing in the Western Isles, possibly visiting Eriskay again.

Tha's all so far, looks like quite a busy year already!

Al.
