Center Board Chip

Im sure it has been covered before but I cant seem to find any posts on this. I broke about a 1" chip off the bottom trailing edge off my center board. I noticed that there doesn't seem to be any glass at that point. Is that normal? What is the best way to go about fixing this chip. I was planning on using epoxy to fix it, but since it is at the bottom I am having a hard time figuring out how I'm going to shape the epoxy.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Nico

There are others. I found them searching for marine tex. I fixed about a 1" triangle that broke off the tip of my CB with Marine Tex. To support the goo, I inserted two headless skinny short nails perpendicular to the break-edge of the board--I drilled holes just big enough for the stems to hold. That was two years ago and it's in the same shape I sanded it to when I first did the repair. It was easy. Just remember to cover the MArine Tex with cello tape (packing tape is good) while it hardens. I used a fine file to rough down the excess, and then worked my way up grits of sandpaper until the finish was smooth and true/trim. Go slow and check your work to avoid sanding too much.
My next project is to grind out and repair the rusted rebar support spot on one side of the rudder. I'll use Marine Tex for that, too.
Use the white Marine Tex and you'll always have a white area...less to paint if painting your foils is your kind of thing. he he

Thanks for the info the scotch fiberglass website has exactly what I was looking for I will probably start the patch this afternoon. I am still curious though, Is there supposed to be fiberglass at that point on the centerboard or not. Thanks odinsvitskjaldr and LQT420

I am pretty sure that the board is composed of a polyurethane foam with metal rods as reinforcement. No fiberglass anywhere in a new board.

My wife is partly Scottish but the website is purely Texan

There is zero fiberglass in Laser centerboards except for a few thousand that were supplied about thirty four years ago with boats numbered around 11,000. There was a very short period during which those foam cored fiberglass shelled blades were standard.

Just read in LaserWorld (Dec 08) that FRP foils will be available in early 2009. The story didn't say whether the (Crompton made) foam board will be discontinued.
