vang, outhaul, cunni upgrades

Does anyone besides me think the new upgrades are great but absurdly priced. Can anyone give me an idea if there are any deals out there for the equipment. I have a boat that is ready to race except for the $700 worth of equipment I need to add. I choose to sail my J24 and Sunfish which are ready to race without an additional $700. I will do it eventually and it will be sooner if I can figure out a way to do the same thing for half the price. Any ideas?

Cheap in Charleston

The rant has gone on since the new bits were proposed and has gradually died down as most boats actively used for racing have already been upgraded.

700 estimate seems a little high -- I think you're rounding up. Both vang and outhaul/cunningham upgrades are around 275 each.

Keep an eye out on craigslist and on the wanted section of this site for a deal. I got my out/cun kit for 200 off a local guy via craigslist, and my vang for 90 off an ad on this site.

Buy the vang upgrade, its the best investment you can make for your Laser. Might be able to save $$ buying only the deck hardware for the outhaul/cunn and building the rest yourself - its pretty easy. Especially if you have some spare blocks, etc. Laying around. The stock lines on the upgrades need to be replaced anyways. If you buy the stuff from Colie Sails in NJ with the "Mojo" upgrade it includes the nice Maffioli and spectra lines...

700$ aint to high of estamite

i looking at same i looking at 160-200£ for outhaul + cunny and 200£+ for the kicker ( with out any other blocks) so we looking at atleast 500$ with all ropes ect

also we fited out the boat i race n we were cheaper for its cunni and new main sheet track than just lasers outhaul+cunny

I have seen all the hardware separately and when you buy the blocks, ie singles, doubles etc they are $10-20 each so the upgrades are relatively cheap until you add the "builder supplied" hardware in the cunningham/outhaul deck blocks and cleats and these really push the price up such as I have seen $50 for the deck blocks and $80 for the cleats which is really alot for 2 blocks and some cleats.

Help is on the way for the club and recreational sailor. They will not be class legal but we have the double pad eye for the mast base in production now. They can be seen here;

Truth be told, ours is actually cast and stronger for less money. We are working on the double cam cleat base as well.

Thats the thing though about the Laser one design class. I think its great how it means all the boats are equal and there is close racing but its annoying how you cant go buy a cheaper product that doesnt affect the boat performance, however I know that if you relax the rules a little bit people will try anything to get an advantage.

The problem, unlike the sails, is that you force people to change back should they decide to sail in a legal event. That change is worse than simply changing a sail. Playing around with the screws (plus having to remove them since 5200 is probably used to seal the screws) is something many people wouldn't want to do just because it can really mess up the boat.

The upgrades are worth the money. Sell the Sunfish, and you will have money left over.

Awesome! I've decided that staying class legal on my 30 year old boat isn't worth the $$. I just want it to sail well. I'm waiting on you guys to have a whole vang upgrage kit :)

I too will buy non class legal parts if the opportunity presents itself for a cheaper vang and cunningham upgrade. Hell, I just sail for fun, so I may figure out how to get a jib on the front...

I can see the vang costing that much, but isnt the cunningham upgrade 4-5 block and some line?

My opinion is that you dont need all that to have fun...
