Batten tip

This has probably been brought up before I forgot to secure the tip on
the batten now I have one stuck in sail. I would appreciate any help.

this is a pain in the ass. You need to walk it out bit by bit out of batten pocket. It took me awhile to get two tips out after one day of big breeze. I'll never forget to superglue my tips on again!!!!

g'luck friend.....

Just walk it out with my fingers, and have patience right, thanks pal
you think I would learn after sailing Hobies for years.

Try turning the lights down low....... then... place a torch on the underside and shine up towards yourself. This will show you where the cap is in relation to the elastic. Then work it out with fingers and put a bare batten end in and twist it to move the elastic if required. I have lost a few caps and mostly just use electrical tape on the ends nowadays as long as it is close as possible to max lenght..good luck

Possible tip for the future -

Since I moved on to a rolled sail I have adopted the advice of my sail maker from other classes and just leave the battens in. You have to be careful how you start rolloing the sail but you quickly get used to it. I am assured that the damage caused by leaving the battens in under tension is a lot less than taking them out and no problem with lost ends or lost battens!

Can anyone give a diagram or description of how the elastic fits inside the end of the pocket, ive got one stuck and cant work out where/ how its stuck behind the elastic

I haven't but I have almost been hit on the head by one flying through the air. Seems to be when you rig in 30+ knots and you haven't hooked the boom on yet that battens go flying. Not a problem sailing until 40+

Thanks everybody, the closehanger trick worked yall saved me a trip
to sailmaker which almost 2 hours away in Chasn. and the traffix is
a nitemare I mean I'd rather have a sister in a ???? ????? than have put up w/ that mess. Thanks again guys and good sailing. Mike

I pop off the batten tips and thus eliminate the tip catching drama in the sleeve. easy on the sleeves and batten.
removing battens for folding will do no harm to stitching and sail on a periodic basis.

related question- new battens have 2 different ends, which goes in and which out? One is square-ish, the other has flares creating a concavely curved end. I assume this end is designed to hold the batten in and therefore that side goes to the outside edge?
