Teflon Mast Step Pads

In past posts I have heard mention of "teflon mast step pads" to protect the gelcoat at the bottom of the mast step. Can anyone offer comment as to the need for this and then offer direction as to where I can purchase or make a teflon or other recommended pad? Thanks.
If you have a US built boat newer then 1993 then you don't need one as SS plates are set into the step during construction. If you have an older boat then you want to add one thay can be acquired at your local dealer. Search the forum for installation tips..
