Haarstick sails

I have been away from the racing for a while due to surgery.

I returned on the weekend forgetting just about everything including all three sails and batterns.

Anyway my old man through me this old sail that looked like it was falling apart, stained and dirty. 1985 or 22 years old from a 123*** (Can't remember the rest of the numbers) number boat. I noticed it had Haarstick written on it, and "computer cut".

I came second on handicap that day and I did'nt even think I was going to start the race.

Anyway the point is a 22 year old sail that looked like it was falling apart worked better than the regular sail that I have been using which is less than one season old. Now I want to compare it to my new sail which I have not used yet. it will be interesting to see.

I'm wondering if Haarstick still makes laser sails in any way.

Congrats on your great performance!

Only North and Hyde make Laser sails now. Haarstick is a legal sail, as they used to make them for the class. A friend of mine has an old Haarstick, and she whips me all the time. She bought a new sail, and yeah, she still beats me, but she says the new sail doesn't talk to her. She means she hasn't figured out how to trim it, as it is different. I'd love to hear the results of your sail comparison.

If the sail was new in 1985, it will be made from 3.2oz sailcloth, not the stiffer 3.8oz that was introduced in 1986 and required different tuning techniques to the old softer sail.

Haarstick sails are faster than Hyde or North due sails to the naturally favorable environmental conditions of Rochester NY... they are even faster than the Intensity sails....

If you're interested, I know some folks that will sell you a 20 year old Haarstick sail for only slightly more than a new sail would cost.

It's a 3.8oz sail. and I will get back to you all on the sail comparison.

I went out today for a blast as the westerly is still blowing from Saturday. I used my normal sail and could not get the same response out of it. Next weekend I'll set up the new sail and give it a go.

i use a 30 year old elvstrum sail on my 2002 laser for practice. i have sailed next to new class legal sails and can't point as high and im about .5 knot slower.

Hi there,
I own

(Standard+folded):
1 Elvstroem Sail, 1st series of produktion (has no window),
1 Elvstroem Sail of later produktion series (has a window),
1 Haarstick Sail ("CompuCut") of the 80ties, sailed very few (looks like new),
1 Hyde 3.8oz Hyde, made in the 90ties, in good condition,
1 Hyde 3.8oz Hyde, made in 2001 in good condition,
3 Hyde 3.8oz Hyde, made in 2005, still in the "OEM"-bag/ never used and waiting to be used.

(Standard+rolled):

1 Hyde 3.8oz, made in 2004, in very good condition (my racing sail).

and also:

1 4.7 rig (Hyde/PSE, unused new, in "OEM"bag).

1 RadialRig (from the early 80ties with halyard, violet-pink-white coloured from Haarstick/PSE).

1 lightly used North-RadialSail, MkVI, 3.8oz (from ~2004) from Scott (Thanks a bunch for it, Scott! Best greetings to Falmouth/Maine)

From my experience with those sails, THE ONLY TRUTH IS:
The rolled Hyde Standard is the best!

ALSO:
I doubt, that Haarstick ever made a 3.8oz DraconSail for the Laser. I guess, already the early ones of those 3.8oz (such sails don't have that red "ILCA"-button) have been made by Hyde/North.

Here is a picture of a Haarstick 3.8oz sail that I took in 1987. I think Haarstick made Laser sails up until about 1992 when North took over.

Horizon, your photo is a prove that Haarstick made 3.8oz sails. Thanks for your reply.
