Sailing laser in NY?

In the fall, winter and spring there are several sailors from Manhattan who participate in the Cedar Point YC frostbite series in Westport, CT. The fleets are large and very competitive. On summer weekends there are various Laser fleets in the tri-state ares that are accessible from the city, but nothing that I am aware of in Manhattan. The only racing I am aware of in Manhattan is in J24s out of the WFC or the remote control boats in Central Park.

There are several clubs in the tri-state area that race various dinghies after work in spring/summer but I am not aware of a series that is less than an hour from the city by train, bus or car.

I also live in Manhattan and would love to find or start a week night series similar to what they have at Treasure Island and SFYC in San Francisco. I have been speaking to Liberty Landing Marina about leaving boats there to see if I could start something up. It is in Jersey City, but I thought it might be a nice compromise of convenience and cost.

I seem to recall reading or hearing that there is a Laser fleet out of Deep Creek Yacht Club in Gateway Marina on Dead Horse Bay (Jamaica Bay). I think it, City Island YC or Staten Island Yacht Club are the closest yacht club facilities that you could leave a boat (in terms of distance).

can you say New York Yacht Club?

course it takes five best friends that happen to be members, and a good chunk of money in your pocket, but that shoulden't be too big a problem

I know that! lol

but everyone thats a member of NYYC sails in the summer at the summer club

its a YC in NY and RI

best of both worlds

work with me!

It's a restaurant in New York, it's a yacht club in RI. I sure as hell wouldn't want to take a 7 hour round trip ride to Newport everyday nor every weekend for 1 day, 2 days at most of sailing. I sailed the BI race with a guy from Manhattan, he sails in the Manhattan sailing club, and was talking about trying to start up a Laser fleet.

OK. There is an active group at the Nyack Boat club. Do a search and go to their web site etc. By public transportation, take the train to Tarrytown, and a cab or bus across the river. You could keep a car a the Palisades Mall, which isn't far. ( I know there is a bus from Tarrytown to there)

There's also a smaller group in Shattemuc Yacht Club in Ossining. The train is not far from there.

Other accessasble clubs from the train are Tarrytown YC and Washington Irving in Tarrytown, but i don't think there are lasers there.

Maybe there's something at Bay Head on the Jersey shore. The train is nearby.

If you're just looking for a gorgeous place to sail, there's the napeague bay out on long island in amagansett. There is also a yacht club right where i put in. I've seen them sail lasers but in general i haven't seen them sail much at all. so, what you get is wide open water, no sandbars, nooks to explore, an island to sail to and pretty much guaranteed wind every day that starts to pick up at 3 pm. there is also a group of laser sailors that sails near sag harbor. it's considered "secret" but the guy at the kayak shop in the town of amagansett knows about it and when and where they meet. i've never sailed with them, but it seems like they must have a pretty good time. other than that all i've heard of is the city island yacht club.
