UV protection for deck

What do you use for UV protection on the deck? I have been told to just wash with water. But wouldnt something for UV protection extend the life and quality of the deck be better than nothing?

What about all the time that the boat is on the water? Do you sail with a deck cover? I only know of an Armor All spray on protectant; but it would make the surface real slick. Which is obviously undesirable.

yea, you don't need anything while sailing, just while your not sailing, buy a set of covers for that

303 Aerospace Protectant is a good product. They call it "SPF 40 for your stuff"

Available at West Marine, REI and online.

It's really nice to know you have an opinion - even if you didn't ask the original question of the thread........

It might seem unimportant but UV damage to plastics and fiberglass and just about anything else in direct sunlight is cumulative and insidious. If you plan on keeping your boat for any amount of time its probably a wise decision to prolong the strength and performance of the material used to build it.
So how many of you launch your boat and right after you are done sailing you cover your boat? Can you say you have never left your boat out in the sun for any considerable amount of time? Even a good day sailing is a long time in the sun.
When I was searching for boats I saw a lot that were fairly young but sun damaged, relative to brand new. I opted for an older boat that had been meticulously cared for. Not only did I fare better on the price but I feel that I got a boat that I will be proud of and hope to have for a long time.
Think about how well you cared for your boat when you go to sell it.

if its not being sailed, it always has a cover on it

except the morning of a race when it's being rigged

after I come in, and the sail rolled around the mast and on deck, cover goes on

its a 2002, and looks like new

Mine has a cover on it, except when it's being sailed. I use teflon polish on the bottom, but not on the deck. It is slick and I sometimes have a big enough problem staying on the boat. Ha ha. If someone has a non-slick solution for the deck, I'd like to hear it, too.

what kind of hiking pants do you wear Merrily? I wear SEA's and the SEA shorts they sell to go over the hiking pants, works pretty well

What about all the glass fibre boats that are swinging around on moorings and sitting in marinas day in day out, without covers for 365/366 days per year. I have never bothered to protect one on these with any sort of UV block and they seem to survive OK (often for a long time compared to many Laser hulls).

You leave your sail on the mast? does that have a cover? I would be more worried about UV damage to the sail than to anything else!!!

Do the shorts protect the neoprene in the hiking pants from UV damage?

And what about the wheels on your dolly? Do you have covers to protect them from the UV?

we only do that at multiple day races, we would get in at say between 4 and 6, take the mast down, and roll the sail around the mast and put it on the deck, and then put the cover on, but you do it so there are only a coule of feet of sail/mast sticking out, 70% or more is covered up, and since its already late in the day, it doesn't get much more sun

thats how everyone does it here, and I'm sure people your way do it too
