Laser sailing in miami this winter sounds pretty good.

Is the OCR a restricted event for olympic sailors or can idiots show up and get their asses kicked at random ?

I'm not sure what the "rules" are and couldn't find anything on the website. No NOR is posted. For the record:

1- I am (slightly) above-average club level sailor
2- I know the rules
3- The primary goal is to observe and learn from the top level of the sport, no concerns about finish position.

So, am I welcome ?

I have alot of freinds who go. If you want to spend alot of money to get your ass handed to you by a ton of olympic hopefuls but learn alot in the process and get to mingle with the best go for it. It's an international regatta and the best will be there but Miami is an awesome and beautiful place to sail and it might be a nice break from the winter.

If you live nearby or want a winter vacation with some possible sailing>>>>>
Go!! Enjoy yourself!! Take a good book or two for the half of the scheduled race days when there will be no sailing .

If the trip is a long one to a regatta where you hope to sail with the best...save your money and go to three or four other events held at venues where there is likely to be sailable weather. The Miami OCR is an event scheduled in an expensive crime ridden area, during a season of spradic conditions most of which make for lousy sailboat races.

Yes I DO think it is a stupid event!!!!

i agree with most of the stuff yoiu say fred but this i dont. Miami is an awesome and beautiful place to sail and is personally my favorite. yes there is crime in areas surrounding coconut grove but it doesnt mean your stuff is going to get jacked.

Hi 1Sailor,
I enjoyed going to the Miami OCR regatta, I knew there wasn't a snowball's chance in hell I was going to be competative. It was light winds for 4 out of 5 racing days. We sailed (about my guess) 4-5 miles out in Biscayne bay. If you didn't know someone that had a coach boat to get a tow, it made for a early leaving time prior to the first race to make the 1-1.5 hour sail to the race course.
Trying to find semi-affordable lodging was a challenge... I managed to price line the Hilton downtown. Not alot of parking by the sailing center either especially if you don't get there early.
I did get to meet and talk to Kevin Burnham, and I also got see and held his gold medal (Paul Forester/Kevin Burnham USA 470 class Athens 04). That was pretty cool.... He gave a presentation that evening at the Coconut Grove Yacht Club. So if you want to go by all means go for it....
That's all for now,

Biscayne Bay is a great place to sail and the Rolex OCR is a great event. BUT your stuff will get jacked so be aware. Our Suburban got "professionally" broken into last year in the parking lot of the sailing center when we were all out on the water. Everything from tools to backpacks with wallets was taken and they by- passed Chevy's crappy alarm system. Lesson learned is leave nothing in your car anywhere in the greater Miami area...other then that enjoy yourself :)
