I have been saling since I was a kid, and have recently bought a laser (my dreamboat when I was a kid). I have been sailing at cochiti lake which is between Albuquerque and Santa Fe.. I was wondering if there are any other laser sailers interested in meeting at Cochiti sometime.. Anyone in Santa Fe or Albuquerque??? Also I'm thinking about trailering my boat 2000 miles, any suggestions...

I don't know whether to call you drtoofer or Shiny-side-down Rob. Welcome to TLF, despite my confusion!

The North American website at www.laser.org says that there's only one Laser fleet in New Mexico :( and it sails at Lake Heron. I suggest you go to your district website, District 23, at: http://www.sailtherockies.com/ to contact people to sail in your area. :) Good luck!

Howdy Doc,
I did sail my Laser at Elephant Butte Reservoir once a couple of years back.
Was a great time, with some serious high winds.

Hello drtoofer,

Anything to do with two-fer?

I am new to the area -- work out of both Santa Fe and Los Alamos. I just joined this forum today and was about to post a wanted ad for two lasers. My plan is to have two lasers on one trailer so that when I go to the lake(Heron, Elephant Butte, or elsewhere), I'll have at least one other boat to sail with -- the idea being that it is easier to find a sailor who wants to sail than a sailor with a sailboat who wants to sail.
I am eager to race and would love to find other laser sailors interested in building the class again.

Do you have a boat now? If not I know a good contact for boats. I would love to hook up with some other lasers. I live in the North Valley of Albuquerque. I have been going to Cochiti Lake, not a bad lake, shifty wind, but not really a pretty place. From what I hear, Heron is nice. I am orginally an ocean sailor so I'm getting used to the crazy lake winds... Oh yeah Keep me posted on the boat situation.... two-fer/shiny side down rob..

I am currently boatless. I, too, am an ocean sailor (most recently J/35). I live in Santa Fe. Last weekend, I joined the New Mexico Sailing Club and visited Lake Heron. It is a nice organization, and they have a pretty big marina there. There are three J/24's that are pretty active -- trail their boats to Elephant Butte and Colorado to race -- and one Etchell that's moving to Elephant Butte for the winter. The marina can hold about 100 boats. I counted about 50 masts in slips last weekend. No lasers there last weekend. I know a club member who lives in Los Alamos who trails two lasers on a single trailor, but I haven't spoken to him for over a month. It is from him that I got the idea of getting two lasers at the same time -- better chance of achieving "fleet status." From talking to the sailors at NMSC, it sounds like there is more racing at the Butte. The problem they have had at Heron is that the drought for the last several years has had a big effect on water levels. Heron is a pretty lake and the surrounding area is beautiful. Sailing probably ends there in October because of the water and air temperature.

Hey J,

Took me a while to get back have sick two year old on my hands.. I was planning on sailing yesterday, however, daddy duty called.. I have a great contact for new of slightly used boats... Man a J/35 is a sweet boat.. A little large for the lakes around here. If you get two boats, I have a friend who claims to be a good skipper, bet he would sail with us... His name is jeff...I am hoping to get a cabin at Heron for the weekend and sail (in my old wet suit) once or twice before they close it down for the winter.. I think I'll join the NM sailing club too. Talk to you soon rob
