Why do you own more than one sunfish

Sail with friends or family or just an addiction...or saving the new one for racing? Or?

I've got 3 Sunfish. Two back east and one in California. Friends and family is why. So I can do this back east and this in California.

I own two sunfish, one is a 78 and the other is an 07. The 78 I bought first to enjoy, than I saw the 07 and it was a different design, thought it would be cool to try both.

I have (4) currently... should probably sell one or two... but:
1st: 1960's Super Porpoise (a slightly larger Sunfish clone) - bought for $50, but parts were hard to come by and I didn't have a trailer, so didn't sail it a ton
2nd: 1960's Sunfish: bought off eBay, *because* it came with a trailer (I needed a trailer, wanted a Sunfish for better chance to get parts)
3rd: 2000 Sunfish: found a steal of a deal on craigslist and upgraded to the much nicer/newer boat, rolled gunwales - a nice improvement all around
4th: 1970's(?) Minifish: great condition, and again, got it very cheap off CL, bought for my sons to use and sail at the same time as me.

 Gathered my worst rudder, mast, daggerboard, sail, and riggings—sold off with my all-fixed-up Porpoise II clone-fish to a Dad, who wanted to teach sailing to his two 9-year-old kids.

Didn't know I didn't want a Porpoise :( but the seller said, "It's a Sunfish trainer". :) As it DID have the Sunfish logo on the sail, I asked myself, "How can I go wrong for $125?" Bought it, then tried to lift it!

Over the years, bought three Sunfish—none over $350. As it's the beginning of the season here in New England, 'might sell the best one for $700, as it isn't being used by family and friends as much as I had hoped.

I only have one, it's a 1968 close as I can guess, would like to get my hands on a newer one also

Two good reasons. I keep looking for another " deal"....but I sail solo....and should just keep on ONLY looking.

Because they are fun and inexpensive. And they needed homes. 4 family boats, 3 fiberglass and one wooden. Only two of us sail but you never know when we might want to have a race. 1 wooden Standard Sailfish because it is light and fun. 3 foster Sunfish, 2 fiberglass and one wooden. 1 foster Super Sailfish.

This has taken up most of our time recently, building a Penobscot 14. Just did the float test and now we will gather parts for a sprit rig. Or maybe a lateen. Then final paint.

Hey everyone , new here I just got a alcort sailfish don't know the year it might need new paint but it's not too bad has all the parts they are not in the best conditions but still functional I want to have it in the water as soon as possible but I have no clue where to find a sail that's all that I need by chance does anyone know where I can find one ? Or if any of the sunfish sails would work on the sailfish?

Hi AlcortSailfish

Congrats on your new boat. Which "Sailfish" do you have? If it is fiberglass then that is a Super Sailfish MKII and it uses the same sail as the fiberglass and wooden Sunfish, which are 75 square feet. Also the same as the 13' 9" wooden Super Sailfish.

If you have the 11' 7" Standard Sailfish then it uses a 65 square foot sail, the same as the Minifish. 9' mast and 11" 9' spars.

If your wooden Sailfish has a handgrip with 3 holes, then it is a Super. If it has 2 then it is a Standard.

Be careful if you find out that you need rudder parts. The Sailfish family (and wooden Sunfish) use a smaller vertical hinge plate than the fiberglass Sunfish.

Would love to see a picture!

Cheers

Kent and Audrey

It's 13'9" it's says alcort sailfish on the sides it looks like that blue one in the picture , so the sunfish sail would work? And where could I find one for cheap? Maybe used

Sunfish sail will work on yours - it is a Super Sailfish Mk II. Look on eBay, this forum, Craigslist, and some aftermarket sellers. I would strongly suggest NOT buying a "Racing version" of a Sunfish sail. They have more power, and the last thing a Sailfish needs is any more power! Have fun with it. Sailfish are cool boats.

Will it work with just any sunfish sail or a certain sunfish and it should be a 75 sq. Ft. Sail or what if it's bigger ?

I have a 75 sq ft sailfish sail that needs a little bit of repair. Its red, blue and white. It has a rip at the bill of the sailfish logo. To repair it you would need to get some red sail repair tape and put it over the rip on both sides. Then cut out some black tape (from a a sail number) and use it to recreate the sailfish bill. The sailmakers label is missing. The sail is usable, but not crisp like a new one would be. I'd just want shipping costs as I promised the person who gave it to me to pass it along to a good home.

I am most definitely interested how much would shipping cost ? I live in San Diego ca thank you so much I'm so excited how can we do this how can o send you a personal messege?

That vintage sail would be perfect, as long it is for the Super Sailfish or Super Sailfish MKII. There is no difference in the logo between the Standard Sailfish and the other 2.

Back to the thread. Why do we own more than one Sunfish? We each need one to sail, plus spares in case friends drop by. Fiberglass boats used to get sailed the most but lately we've been taking the wooden boats out a bit more. Then there are the foster boats, fun to fix up, sail, then sell to new families. That is a ton of fun.

I don't even have one Sunfish! But I do have a Super Porpoise, and it's likely to be an orphan. I'm still learning to sail, and its is fun to get out on the water and sail around.
I do however have 5 bicycles....

Be careful, South Tower Demon, that's usually how the addiction starts! It's often easier and cheaper to find a trailer with a 'fixer upper' on it than to buy a trailer on it's own. I currently have 3 Sunfish, 3 Sailfish and 3 Minifish. Plus 3 Seitech dollies and 3 trailers. Oh, and a couple of kayaks and a canoe and a 12' motorboat. I restore and resell and find great satisfaction in the process, plus have met fantastic people, have learned a great deal and in the end maybe make a buck or two.

I have a 2005 race Sunfish that I baby (always covered, well maintained. new sail every few years etc.) and a 1985 Sunfish that I keep on a ramp on my beach, uncovered, for fast access and a quick sail after my house chores are done. The '85 Sunfish is bare bones affair with no race go-fast gear to speak of other than a ratchet block and Harken cleat rig inspired by fellow Sunfish Forum poster, tag - my fish. However, I won't tell you now many rescue 'fish I have owned over the years...suffice to say I don't have enough fingers and toes to count them all. Getting them back on the water has been a source of great satisfaction for me.

Does the red deck get hot?...or you get enuff spray to keep things cooled down?? :-D

The red deck does get warm on a sunny day, but I sailed today on Cazenovia Lake (near Syracuse, NY) and as the high today was only 61 degrees, the warm deck felt just right. Hopefully we get a few more nice days in October before winter starts to set in.

Just for the record, I'm up to four. :) But that should be halved by next July.

Just imagine selling the two best of my four Sunfish.
