How to read wind?

Hello,

I am a Laser sailer, and I am not good at sensing the wind shift, identifying gust/lull, or predicting the wind shift. So overall, I am not good at reading wind. Can people tell me the tips for how to read the wind (where is the gust, which wind direction the gust will have etc) and how I can train my eye?

I heard that the dark-looking part of the water would be gust. I can see that on the flat water condition like the like and in light wind condition. But on the sea where wind is more than 10 knots and already enough waves, I usually cannot tell the difference...

Thanks,
Toshi

I too have trouble reading gusts and shifts when sailing in waves. Have you tried using a compass?
I do, but the waves make it hard to read...

Looking at your heading relative to other boats is a big clue. And how hard the other sailors are hiking.
