Looking at buying an older 14.2

It's been sitting outdoors so has bad mildew on the level surfaces and I suspect maybe inside the keel. Are there good places to put inspection ports so I can bleach it if needed? Also, its not sitting on a trailer but rather the ground. Could this be an issue?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!

I don't have a huge amount of boat specific knowledge so I was waiting for someone else to chime in first but here's my 2c., based on general background and owning my 2nd trailer-sized boat now.

I wouldn't think standing water and funk in the footwell would be too big a deal. Standing water inside hull/cuddy would be a bigger problem over time, especially if you live where it would freeze over winter. There are plenty of good cleaners to deal with the funk, but freezing water, especially if the plywood ribs were saturated can really tear stuff up. Also not a positive to have stuff laying in the mud season after season, nothing good can come from it. If the sails, rigging, and woodwork have some life left, maybe take a chance, but I don't think I'd go more than $500, especially w/o a trailer. I also don't think I'd go cutting a bunch of inspection holes. Just crawl inside the cuddy with a good light and something long to poke at stuff with. Good luck.

8dust: thanks, those were good thoughts that you shared! The boat is priced at $500.00 and from what I can tell, the sails look good; The boat is in a warmer climate so highly likely that any ice would be at a bare minimum. And it doesn't come with a trailer but I own one so there's that...

Well good then. $500 is kind of my magic number for what I would roll the dice on something for. If the sails, spars, lines, metal and moving bits are ok, but the hull ends up shot, I would think you could part it out for almost that much. If the hull ends up sound, then you have yourself a real nice project and probably a fine little craft after some elbow grease. Post some pictures as you get into it further.

Well we struck a deal with the understanding that I'd pick it up weekend after next, only for him to sell it to someone else without even a text or phone call to me. Very disappointing.

Shucks, that's a real kick in the nuts. I'm sure you were getting excited about it. Truth is though, that there were a lot of questionable unknowns with that one from what you described. I don't doubt that someone who would sell it out from under you like that, took even worse care of it than he let on. Consider it a learning experience and just more data to use in comparison when you look at the next one. Really, given a little time, I bet you can find one in significantly better shape for not a heck of a lot more money... It's all a trade-off. You could have had this one in two weeks for $500, then spent $750 and all Spring and most of Summer fooling around trying to get it in the water, or, now, you wait for your shot to come along, then spend $1200 on one ready-to-go and sitting on a trailer... Curse this douchebag the rest of today, then move on to better circumstances tomorrow. Good luck, and post an update as the search continues.

Amen! Now I snagged mine last October with a quick 5 hour drive to Detroit from Chicago after seeing it the night before on the web. $1200 for a basically sound boat and trailer in excellent shape. Will invest about $1700 into her to upgrade to my standards and then keep for years to come. Seems like $1200 would be a good budget for initial purchase, the $500 version could be a candidate for the dumpster.
Happy Hunting!

And yesterday I towed home a 1990 Mod 2 :) Came with Trailer, excellent sails and rigging, motor mount, swimming ladder, handbook... the works :)

Now to rearrange the garage so that it fits in :)

! Great
That other guy ended up doing you a favor, even if it didn't feel like it at the time.
Post some pictures when you get the chance.

Good show! You got all the goodies that I will have to buy and install on mine. Not to mention the Mod 2 had the stronger transom, I will have to do substantial work on my Mod 1 to beef it up so the swim ladder and motor mount will hold up. I have seen some great deals for these boats but they were always at least 1000 miles away from my Chicago home. Would have been costly to make an inspection and then somehow have the boat shipped to me. My boat was sitting in Detroit so a 5 hour drive each way sealed the deal. Kind of wish it would have been a Mod 2 but then again I only paid $1200 for a basically sound boat and trailer. If you don't mind my asking, how much did you close your deal for?

I'm certainly pleased that it came down this way! I was in Minneapolis and a boat dealer there has a 1990 with trailer and all sorts of goodness, for $1,300.00 and it's only a 7 hour drive one way to come back and pick it up. The really nice part since the Capri needs to go in the garage, I was able to take my Phantom 14 with me to Minneapolis and consign it at the boat dealer's place so I don't have to deal with space issues or selling it myself. A great weekend, all in all and the wife enjoyed the drive up to MSP...

OMG I think you got a tremendous deal at that price. I only paid $100 less for my version 1 and will be investing a fair amount of time and $ to get it to level yours is at. And to boot you have the version 2..........
Good show!!!
