Is this Sunfish worth it?

I found a sunfish on my local craigslist, and I decided to come here for a little help. He is asking $600, it comes with 2 sails, and has a mainsheet cleat. It looks like a pre 1972 because there is no storage at the back of the cockpit. It's my 1st boat purchase, and I'm not sure if it is a good deal or not. What do you guys think?

I don't think that that is a sunfish hull. A pre-72 boat should have aluminum trim around the edges. The cockpit also looks kinda funny. And if it's a "clonefish" And your still interested is offer $350 and go from there.

Although not new to sailing, I still consider myself a novice, and I am brand new to sailing sunfish. I recently just bought this exact same boat and have been sailing it for a couple of weeks. If your just going to be sailing for fun and not racing, I'd say the price is ok assuming the trailer is included. Without a trailer I'd agree with a $300 - $350 offer, assuming the boat is in good shape (follow the forum suggestions on buying a used Sunfish). I love my AMFlite, I was sold on the wood splash guard and cockpit rails. If your interested in racing it won't be Sunfish class legal, and look elsewhere. But if your just looking for a good time , I'd say go for it if the hull looks good. I would advise you to look into the old VS. new style rudders, I am already looking into upgrading mine as the old backing block is rotten and I need to install a port to fix it, so I may just upgrade in the process. The old rudder isn't awful, but the new style is easier to work with.

Thanks so much everybody. I had no idea it was a clone fish... I thought it looked funny, but i wasn't sure. i tried to find that logo online, but i couldn't find it. I'll try to offer him $300, and go from there. Again, thanks a bunch everyone. I don't know what I would've done once I bought it and realized it wasn't a sunfish...

Look at what Danpal said it's an AMFlite not a clonefish I was mistaken

Kimble96 had good advice. I like the AMFlites and Windflites, they have the rolled edge and the bridle attachement doesn't have backer blocks to worry about. The teak splashguard, molded coaming and cockpit handrails are cool. AMF eliminated many of the water intrusion points, but check to make sure the boat weighs around 140 pounds.

Your price depends on market demand. $600 would be a steal down in NW Florida.

Good luck

This is indeed an AMFlite. AMF made this from the Sunfish hull design, and it the prototype of the the modern (i.e. post 1972) Sunfish. The underbody of the hull is identical to the Sunfish, and the rudder design is identical to the pre-1972 Sunfish design.
The AMF Minfish also had some of the same features, but had the post 1972 rudder design.

Arbor 16,

I have a few fiberglass coamings (splash gurards). E-mail me at: [email protected] for details, prices and shipping. I assume you want a true Sunfish coaming and not the wood coamings shown in this string - but I have a set of the wood AMFlite coamings as well!
