Old laser

I just purchased PFS 06539. It has been in storage for over 25 years and seems incredibly tight and stiff. It doesn't appear that there has ever been an auto bailer installed. Is this possible? Were the early lasers constructed in such a manner that the bond between the cockpit and hull prohibited water from entering the hull, as this bond appears to be perfect.
Can I just install the brass thru hull that Intensity Sails sells, as I cringe at the prospect of drilling a hole in my hull to secure the auto bailer.

I believe the bailer wasn't a part of the original setup, but was designed later to fit the existing hollow.

All Lasers are fundamentally constructed in the same way.

Buy the real thing: Laser Cockpit Bush Assy. - Brass

Don't worry, it's no big deal. I think the bailer comes with pretty good installation instructions.

So you now have just a plain hole and a plug? If it doesn't leak into the inside of the hull, and you don't want to get a bailer, then you don't have to do anything. It probably drains very slowly, but you have to decide for yourself if that's a problem.

I recommend installing an auto bailer. While it won't work as well as a good auto bailer (like an Elvstrom bailer, which won't fit on a Laser), it is a big improvement from what it seems you have now. And I strongly agree that if you don't have the brass through hull fitting you should get that, too.

Yes. Thanks for the info. Wouldn't I need the brass sleeve even if I install the autobailer?

As I understand it, the two actually don't have anything to do with one another. Installing the sleeve would probably be smart in any case, in order to keep the bond and the alignment of the cockpit and hull holes perfect.
