Received Intensity order

The prices are great, but I was kinda surprised by the medium quality overall. I ordered a quick release for the gooseneck, and it almost seems to be made of plastic, but chrome colored. Works ok, however...just cheezy feeling. The threaded bolt was too long, searching for bit of sail to tear, so that had to be altered. The plastic washers didn't fit either. At least I didn't have to drill out my gooseneck for it to fit, like I've read. Not sure I would have drilled out a nice bronze piece for this item... but...anywayzz

Next I ordered the mast bottom cap. Just loose in the box...no pins, etc For now I just wedged it in with a single wrap of electrical tape to make it very snug. Don't think I'll worry about securing for now as I don't see it coming out in the near future. IF so...another $8 isn't going to break the bank.

Lastly got the hiking strap... this seemed pretty nice for the $ and they thru in some Port/Stb stickers...I guess thinking they'd be needed at some point.

All in all...all very LOW cost...should be all very usable, but I kinda winced at the quick release and looked for "China" somewhere on it.

The mast base cap should be secured to the mast. You should use a 1/8" diameter pop rivet on two sides. I would also silicone seal it.

I believe the bolt hole diameter of modern goosenecks is smaller than what it was back in the 60's. New goosenecks use a nut and bolt instead of a bronze screw threaded into the gooseneck itself.

you get what you pay for?

I'm sure you can find a quick release at a bike shop in your area that might be of higher quality.
I agree you should at least pop-rivet the base cap in place.
I really like my hiking strap from Intensity.

I can pop rivet but tbey will stand "proud" of tbe mast and be the rubbing point in my mast holder on the boat. Hence why pins are probably used. Maybe make some pins instead. But the cap isnt coming off easy now as is or leak either

I have the new pins as well if you need them instead of the pop rivets but I have had no issues with pop rivets in the mast pocket. Contact me at cjo1023 at yahoo dot com.

An aluminum pop rivet is made that has a flat top surface, with a taper below it (as one would find in a wood screw). I'd still not "pop" the rivet fully, but file it "flatter", and tape it over.

I'd gone a step further, made a bridle of packaging tape, and pulled a cut-down pool noodle through the mast. A side-by-side float test was made between the pool-noodle mast and standard 50-year-old mast, with the following results: ;)

With 50 years of use, the bronze screw tended to bend (breaking later) or strip-out. I drilled the gooseneck out, and replaced it with a ¼-20 stainless steel bolt + Nylock nut.

Hey Mixmkr,
The goose neck quick release I bought from intensity also had way too long a bolt. You said you modified it, what did you do? If you cut it, what kind of tool did you use to cut it?
Thanks.

I was kind of in a hurry and just put some plastic spacers in, so the bolt end wouldn't stick out...leaving their nut on the end. However, at some point, the best route is to use a hacksaw and cut off the desired amount. Get another nut, same size...and thread it on before cutting. That helps to straighten out the threads when spinning it off, after cutting the bolt.. Or...be careful cutting or some minor filing/burnishing.
