Hello,

very new to all this

I have an old wooden , what i think is a 1950ish super sailfish but i'm not sure. And i am wondering now if I have the correct spars, as i am also looking for a mast.

I have added a few pictures of what i have. the hole for the mast is 2 3/8 inch diameter. Sorry for not getting all the correct part names still learning.

My confusion comes from someone selling what they say is the mast and boom for a super sunfish, but the measurements are much different than i have and it only has a mast and a boom their mast is 19' 1'' in length and tapers from 2 1/4" at base to 1 1/4" diameter at top; Boom is 8' 9 ½", 2" dia.

Any comments would be appreciated
thanks

A Super Sunfish has a Bermuda rig sail (like a Laser), not like the standard Sunfish........You can see a photo of this kind of rig at SUPER SUNFISH sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com

Not sure what you are looking for, but I don't think a Super Sunfish sail would work on a Super Sailfish without some serious modification.

thank you,

I need a mast and just want to know the spars i got with the boat are correct for that boat.

from the pictures and my boat is 13'8" length and beam is 35", what type would you say it is? I thought a sailfish because of the sailfish symbol on the sail but maybe those are not the original parts. I bought this at an auction with no information about it given

I'm more of a Sunfish guy than a Sailfish......so I can't help a lot. I'd check out this website though..........
Small Boat Restoration: Pickin: Wooden Sunfish, Wooden Super Sailfish and Super Sailfish MKII

Scroll down a little and it starts getting into the Sailfish alot. The blogger, Kent, is a real expert in all things "fishy". :)

Hi

Your boat is a Super Sailfish (wooden). It uses the same rig as the Super SAILfish MKII (fiberglass), wooden SUNfish and fiberglass SUNfish.

The mast would most likely be be 2 inch diameter, aluminum, 10 feet long. It may have been aluminum or if a very early model, 1/3 aluminum with a tapered top 2/3.

The spars (boom and gaff) are 13'9" long, 1 1/2 inch aluminum. Or they could have been wooden if an early model. From your picture it looks as though you have the correct spars and sail.

The sail is 75 sf.

The Super Sailfish was a longer version of the original 11'7" Sailfish, made from the early 1950s to early 1960s. They could be factory built or kit built.

As mentioned above, if someone is trying to sell you a Super SUNfish rig (mast and boom) it needs to have a traveler and connection point for a mainsheet, which the Super SAILfish does not have.

Nice boat

Cheers
Kent
