IMHO, the surgery would kill the patient, your wallet and leave you very frustrated. It is a great source of parts for a more structurally sound hull. There are over 200,000 of them out there - you'll find one.

It certainly would make a nice hiking bench now, and use the ends as art pieces around the house. (having a bow or transom mounted on one's wall is always a conversation starter)

Before spending too much time spewing ideas to fix, give us an idea on what your friend is looking for with the repaired boat - ie like it was before,
functional but obviously repaired,
or just back in one piece and usable for having fun

Repair materials should be around $80-120.

Is there damage to the hull as well ?

Too much to repair except from inside. You'll have to gut her like a fish. Almost 25% of the deck structure has been compromised and IMHO, it is too much to fix with just cloth and resin. Offer $25 and if you get it, strip the usable parts and use the bow and stern as decorations.

I separated the deck and hull on an old 1978 Laser. I did many repairs including redoing several "fixed" fractures not unlike yours. It is possible. It does require some experience with epoxy repairs. It may never be competitive on the international level, but will be a good solid day sailer or club racer.

I enjoy doing the repair portions of boat ownership. Not everybody does. Your choice!

hmm i know im resurrecting this thread to late but as john i enjoy the repair parts as well. i think is repairable if you have time, patience, and about 150 in epoxy, cloths, etc

get a a router or grinder, cut the ofended part glue the broken parts and fiber glass the heck out of it, then stich the glued fiberglassed part back to boat and rinse repeat the fiber glass and Voila you will have a very ugly but functional laser
