So... no new Sunfishes this season?

Dearmad

Was at a dealer today and wanted to set up a Fall order with him for a Sunfish I'd want to get going in Spring- if I can snag a ride on his freight, it won't cost me anything. Usually, he said, LaserPerformance would have informed him other dealers by 1 Sep of the new (if any) colors, changes, pricing, etc. of the coming season boats. No word this time. Sounded like LP is having some serious financial concerns, and part of the issue might be with Sunfish boats.

So I'm left dangling right now... grrr...

Anyone have any insight into this situation? I've emailed LP, but not sure if I'll hear back and get any truth. Right now I just want my dealer supplied with pricing and timing and the selection...

Thats sad, and a little surprising.

I mean, i can see for the Sunfish, but lasers are Olympic boats. And I thought also that a lot of college fleets are lasers. So you would think that there would be some pretty steady demand just because of that. Don't they also do the Optimist? (which I thought is an overpriced boat for what is a puddle duck).

Or could it just be mismanagement?

It's a tough business to operate, to inventory, to maintain quality, and simultaneously, to make money commensurate with the effort. We are fortunate to have had Vanguard and LaserPerformance up to now. I hope our luck (and folks who love the classes) holds.

Well my dealer said he got the pricing and models for the coming year and I'm placing an order at the end of this month. However this dealer is likely one of the top 3 in the US for volume of sales, and might have some clout when it comes to placing orders. But he is pretty sanguine about the company's future. In fact he is running his business, so far as I can tell, to ensure that should LP go belly up he's not going under with them...

At any rate it looks like this moron somehow got the reins of LP:

Farzad Rastegar - Google Search

Doing some research on him and I am hesitant to do ANY business at ALL with LP. If I didn't love the lines, handling, ease (I'll be teaching three kids how to sail) of the Sunfish, I would be reconsidering my choice now until someone else bought out tat part of the business. It is really sad. At least it is still made here in the USA.

Sigh...

Fingers crossed for my fate this coming season.
