Transom plug woes

I'm replacing the old leaking plastic transom plug with the metal ronstan one and I am having no luck getting the rivets to grip the hull, any idea's. I've tried regular aluminum rivets and the stainless steel ones from Vanguard, they all seem to grip just the fitting and not the hull. Is it possible that the old holes are too big, should i patch and redrill? Any advice would be appreciated...

You could close the holes and redrill, indeed, or use screws instead of rivets. Remember that this does not need to be superstrong, but make sure it is closed (hence use a good sealant, after cleaning thorougly).
Good luck!

I HATE THE DAMN DRAINPLUG SYSTEM!!!!

We should have a drain hole whose inside edge is flush with the inside bottom of the hull.

The plug should be a simple stopper just like we use in the bailer.

It could have a retaining string with an eye fastened to one of the gudgeon screws.

The hulls would no longer keep a half inch puddle of "no way you can drain it" water.

By the way...

Gouvernail hint:

if you want to drain 100% of the flowing water from your hull, slide a wick through the drain plug and the last of the water wil be sucked out.

BUT IT SHOULD NOT BE THAT HARD!!!!!

Why not put a drain-plug right next to the bailer-plug. This is going to be a real challenge and will require at least 4 people to get any water out of the boat. The water has to be taken out through some G-force that can be accomplished by balancing the boat, turning it over really fast, and pulling up the front while pulling down the back of the boat, right? Could be a real good tool for fleet-building.
