Sunfish Boom Inside Diameter Question

Hi All,

Andy here. Long time 470 and Laser sailor and I'm upgrading a couple of old Sunfishes that are now living in Chatham, Mass.

I've got some old booms that have corrosion that I would like to sleeve a bit in places. On this site...

http://www.rigrite.com/Spars/Kenyon_Spars/1.5-Boom.html

... they provide the Outside Diameter of the boom. But I can't find an official statement anywhere of the Inside Diameter. Anyone have access to that information? And/or a good aluminum sleeving source?

I don't know where and which I will put short outer or inner sleeves on the booms so I figured I'd track down the OD and ID and then find stock aluminum tubing on the web and order it for the re-enforcement.

Also, finding some used booms that are still in good shape would be nice. But they would have to be pretty close to the South Shore south of Boston, Mass or close to Chatham, Mass on Cape Cod.

Found a post on used booms here but too far a drive.

Thanks for any info/recommendations you can provide! BTW, got in a couple days of nice sailing over Easter weekend. This is in Oyster Pond in Chatham with a brand new Kevane sail I had just put on the old girl.

Andy that is my post. I work in New Bedford so I can save you some time and meet you there. The booms are 1.50" diameter and 0.065" wall. The ID then is 1.37". I have some used and some new booms available complete with end caps and hardware if needed. I also have two tubes that are bare if you already have the other parts. Contact me at cjo1023 at yahoo-dot-com.

Excellent. I will contact you. I just need to review a video inventory that I did of the two boats to remind myself of exactly which spars can continue and which ones would be good to swap out.

Best,

- Andy

I once had a boom that had a wooden closet rod on the inside that fit nicely. I'm not 100% sure but I believe a chain link fence rail fits on the inside as we'll. I have a repair of my own I need to do and will look at these options soon. If it works, I'll report back.

Hi KB, you would not want to go sailing in salt water with a steel insert in your boom! BB
Nope. Just muddy Midwest lake water. I have one if the blocks on the boom tearing away. I thought I would run a 6" piece of something on the inside and set it with screws.

I'd recommend that you move the eyestrap to the top of the boom and attach the block with a piece of line. That would spread the load of the mainsheet around the whole boom instead of it pulling on that failing rivet. Also allows the block to rotate around the boom instead of twisting the boom which is another good thing. Just remember that the load pulls at 45 degrees from the eyestrap so the line will angle around the boom so you have to move the eyestrap to get the desired block location.
