but you got to bring you own fish (legal of course :)) .

Huh? Now you have to use a sail provided by Laserperformance with their advertising, put it on your spars, then return it after the Worlds? How is that a good thing for the sailors? Seems like a lot of extra work ...

The builder supplied sail seems like an excellent idea to me. Sails are one big variable that were equalized at the worlds in the era of manufacturer-supplied boats. And remember back then you were handed a boat in a box and had to assemble the whole thing right there, including everything from drain plugs to not-permanently-affixed outhaul cleats - everything - and then at the end of the event take the boat apart again for repackaging and shipping, returning it all back like new.

And besides, these days at major events like the NA's and even most regionals, an increasing number of sailors put sails on and take their sails off the spars at every event. Not the club-racing gear, but the sails you save for big events. So if anything, this worlds approach is simpler and in my book anyway, fairer. Provided the quality control on this batch of sails is top-notch of course, meaning for better or worse, minimal variation.

anyone here know if the Worlds have been "opened" to non-qualifiers like this before?

Tag, may I suggest a cup of coffee? :) The title of this thread is "Sunfish Worlds Now Open to Non-Qualifiers" and that is the case.

Regarding the sails, in addition to the comments by Minifish2 which are completely correct, our International President, Paul Jon Patin really pushed for this . He strongly believes that the popularity of old Worlds boats is due to their colored, commemorative sails. Since we cannot get entire boats from the manufacturer as we did in the old days, the sails will be a good replacement. The thinking is people will want them - there has already been some interest in buying them after the regatta is over and they were just announced yesterday! And it makes for a very photogenic worlds, and sets us apart from pretty much every other class.

I say thanks to Paul Jon for the vision, and thanks to LP for providing the sails! Chris

Chris, I'm not a coffee drinker... maybe that's my problem?

I know that THIS Worlds is now open... I wanted to know if this happened occasionally in the past at previous Worlds, or if this was the 1st time?

Sorry if that was confusing.

I think your question was clear. Perhaps Chris needs some coffee! The world's have been open a few times recently. I know they were open in St. Pete last year, Buffalo and Brant Beach.

So here is a question or three. The illustrated sail in the NOR has a LaserPerfomance logo where the North logo usually is.

Is this just some artistic license and the North logo will be on the sail also?

Did North actually manufacture these sails?

Or is this some Intensity-like private label sail that LP commissioned, effectively an end-run around North?(and if so, what are the ramifications of that!)

..enquiring minds, etc...
