Ronstan X10 Tiller Extension

I just returned to Lasers after a 30 year lay off and the old UJ on the tiller extension has been replaced with a Urethane fixing. The boat I bought is 2nd hand with a Ronstan X10 extension and in the first decent blow the extension came off in my hand.

The Urethane UJ looks rather worn but I can't see any way how, even if new, it could remain attached inside the extension. The extension has 2 holes as though for a bolt but the UJ doesn't have any hole. I clearly need a new UJ which is no problem to order but I can't help feeling I am missing something.

Can someone describe how to secure the extension to the Urethane UJ preferably with a picture. Where I live in Thailand there is no one to ask!

Normally you drill & pin through the extension and through the rubber uj joint then slide some heat shrink over or tape up to stop any chafing.

The Ronstan UJ comes with a hollow 4mm pin. You insert the UJ and drill a hole thru both the extension and UJ. Drive the pin in and wrap it with the electrical tape (they come with a piece of heat shrink tube) to prevent it from chaffing and falling out. I've used clevis pins in place of the hollow pin several times. Hammer it in and grind or file the rest off and wrap it with tape.

Thanks Capt Ahab and Stuck in 80's. At least I now know it isn't some sophisticated joint that I'm missing. I drilled the UJ (sod the rope) and put a small bolt through it and taped it up. (heat shrink comes from another world!). I think that should do it.

Really appreciate you taking the time. Richard
