getting started

I am a very experienced flight instructor forced to change dreams because of eyesight issues.
My wife and I want to start sailing. We have flown around the Bahamas and now want to sail to some of the small Islands that we flew over, Exumas etc. Price seems to suggest a 30ft cruiser would that size boat be safe and comfortable for that kind of adventure? I have no experience but am a very hands on kind of guy and expect to study hard before this happens, possibly 2 years from now.
Any honest advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I sailed a 30ft Pearson 303 to the Abicos and it was great just pick your weather window
carefully.
