cleaning the hull

what is the best way to clean a hull?

The boat I got had been sitting for a little while. Thinking of cleaning it with simple green and then waxing. Or is there a better way when dealing with fiberglass?

Softscrub is the cleaner of choice with the folks I sail with. The ones that stick to it and avoid abrasive cloths and cleaners keep their new-boat gel coat shine for years. That said, I just cleaned a pretty nasty hill recently with straight, undiluted bleach and the results were rapid and striking. I wiped it on generously, waited, the basically repeated and it did most of he job, really quickly.

For different kinds of problems, bugs and stuff, simple green also can be useful.

I've taken to using McLube hull polish as a final step.

for really stubborn stains, i use a product called Sno-Bol. it's a toilet bowl cleaner and very strong. but it works like a charm on 30 year old gelcoat with rust stains...
you do need to follow the advice about wearing gloves and sacrificial clothing/shoes.

I just had some wet leaf stains that were surprisingly bad for only being left on the deck for a couple of rainy days. The grease cutting kitchen counter type sprays did nothing, even after using a scrub brush. However, the stains vanished in about 10 minutes after I sprayed the deck with "Clorox Clean-up". I'm not sure of the bleach concentration, but it did a great job with just a coating of spray.
