Daggerboard, Bungee, and Racer Confusion

I just assembled my new sunfish racer. The manual says to thread one of the brummel hooks on the bungee through the daggerboard hole, but there are two holes. Only the aft hole is large enough, is that the one I use? Of course, I could just remove the brummel hook and then feed the bungee through the smaller, fore hole. Now this is embarressing, but I'm assuming the straight side of the daggerboard is the aft or trailing side. Is that correct? It's been many years since I've sailed an old sunfish, and no, I'm not planning to race but I got a good deal on a 2010 World's. I've given up even trying to understand the use or rigging of the cunningham and outhall adjuster. I'm going to try without them and hope for the best. Any advice?

The straight/vertical edge of the daggerboard should be towards the front of the boat. The curved, and much thinner trailing edge should be towards the back of the boat.

The smaller hole (will be nearer the cockpit) can be used to put a rope handle on that helps to raise and lower the daggerboard.
The shock cord with the brummel hook should then fit okay through the larger forward hole in the daggerboard.

There are some good pictures of the rope handle and the shock cord at Starboard Passage.

Thanks so much. Now the directions in the manual make sense. I just can't believe that I sailed my old used Sunfish, actually a Scorpion, with the wooden daggerboard backward all those years. On the rudder, the curved edge faces forward, but now I see that on the rudder, that is the thicker edge. I spend most of the day yesterday trying to find an answer without success. Obviously, any idiot is supposed to know which way the daggerboard goes. Not sure yet if it would even go in all the way backward, but if it did, then you saved me from a potentially costly mistake. Just joined the forum this am; so again, THANKS for answering.

no worries! get it rigged and out on the water!

Just finished the last step; getting out today. I guess I'll find out if I can sail a racer without the cunningham (for now anyway). Anything's got to be better than my 300 pound, waterlogged Scorpion.

The cunningham and outhaul are completely optional to use even on a race-rigged boat. You can set it and forget it if you choose and be just fine. BB
