Transporting and Storing

Does anyone know of a good way to transport the mast so that it doesn't just sit on the boat wall? Currently, I tie it down but i don't like that it sits on the boat at all. The other end of the mast lays in a prefabricated holder on my trailor but the back end has no options. Any suggestions?

I've got a device that fits ito the stanchions for the tiller that supports the mast on the back-end of the boat. Came with the boat, so I have not idea where to get one or what it's called, but I know that it does exist!

yeah i've seen those too on other poeples boats, but i bought mine used and it didn't come with one. If you ever find out what they are called or what brand yours is that would be very helpful.

Thanks

If you pick through this message board you will find some pictures that I remember seeing a while back of a nice wood cradle that someone fabricated. I had the Catalina steel piece that fits into the tiller mount but lost it in a capsize this summer. It was great because I launched my boat on a river (for free) and motored down under a couple low bridges then made the mast on the beach (lake superior), and the small steel piece was easily stowed, I have considered replacing it with something else but if you check out some of the pictures that I posted you can see my plywood rig that I have been using since I lost the piece.

Here are some pictures of what I think is factory stock. It is made out of 1" X 1" sq tube and two 1 1/4 X 1 1/4 inch angles (1/8 flatbar bent in an L shape), that go onto the rudder post. The two pieces at the top that hold the mast are made out of the same flatbar. The overall length is 17" not including the 2" flatbars that hold the mast, and the spacing between the rudder post is 7 5/8 ". All the parts are then welded together. There is one hole in each "angle that slip over the rudder post. Then a long bolt or allthread holds it all together. Any welder should be able to make this in 15 mins and should cost less than $30.00.

Some good solutions that don't require welding are at the end of this thread:

I built some really simple brackets out of 2x4s that attach at the mast step (used the mast bolt to hold) and over the transom (used a tiller stantion to hold). I then use bungees to hold the mast in the bracket. Has worked well on short and long trips.

a couple of pictures of my setup... I have a block on the transom and a post off the front of the trailer that hold the mast. I also have a couple of collars that hold the boom to the mast, but I just stuff the boom up in the front compartment and tie it down.

Mast support

West marine had a mast support that was pintle mounting in the 2010 catalog. I believe it was $95. My problem is forward, as a do not have a mast crutch on the trailer.

Aft Mast Crutch

I bought an Aft Mast Stand from Annapolis Performance Sailing. I highly recommend this addition to your Capri. It slips right in to the rudder brackets and securely supports the mast up off the boat. You can make something that will work, but if you prefer to spend your time working on other aspects of your boat or sailing, this fits the bill nicely.

Part #TRAMSGM16, Aft Mast Stand, 16" Price: $51.00

I made up a forward mast crutch from 2x4s & some shim material that uses the mast step & bolt. I made my stern one using the trnasom clamp from an old trolling motor and a "U" made from 2x4s. I lined both with old heavy pile carpet fastened with an air staple gun - stuff is near impossible to fasten by hand stapler or nailing. The heavy pile carpet squeezes the mast just right and one rubber bungee over each crutch holds it nice & tight. I put eye bolts on each side of the crutches to fasten the bungeesf, and tie a couple of safety lines to the mast if the bungees should fail.

I need to rework my stern crutch to increase (or decrease) the distance a few inches from it to the mast foot as when the mast is laid back into the stern crutch and remains attached to the foot (like when I'm working on the rigging or picking it up in my boathouse lift for bottom cleaning), the spreaders hit the "U" on the stern crutch rather than the mast settle into the "U". Minor design flaw.....

trailering mast

I just carry the mast far enough forward to fit the masthead on the floor inside the transom.
Wrap a towel around it for padding.
