I've seen them around and would like to know once and for all where to find the black spars, I heard they are made in Europe but I do not know where or what shop. Can anyone help me out?

P.S. I have seen a carbon fiber top section around and would like to know if anyone knows about this or if it is even class legal... Kyle R, the current Radial class leader supposedly has one$$$$$

Don't know about the black spars. Carbon spars are definitely not class legal although a change is being considered by the powers that be, I think. This has been discusssed on this forum; use the search feature to find out more.

A guy at Laser Europeans has Black spars. Picture Hes got everything going on, black spars, and zhik hikers

I think up until this year the European builders have made only black spars. Now I think they have started to make them in the silver for some reason. I may be wrong about this. You really can't get them in the states unless you order them from outside of the country or know someone who is going to Europe to a regatta that could bring you back a set.

Supposedly where you get your spars or what color they are should not matter. All spars around the world are supposed to the same. That being said I know a lot of guys who swear that the black top sections are stiffer.

the carbon firbe top sections have been here for about a year now.not legal yet, just testing them. ive had a go of them on the radial and it makes the boat de-power much easier upwind but i didnt notice the speed difference much because im usually a standard rig sailor so i dont have any trouble holding the radial down

i think the only black spar that has had any advantage in the past is the standard bottom section but now they arent any better or worse than the silver ones from other suppliers. they look much cooler though

I just bought an '82 to refurb and resell and it has black spars.

Looks hot, was one of the Rainbow package boats or something awesome......

negative on painting.

Not an expert on spar sections, but I'm pretty sure it's not a black alumnimum extrusion. There must be some electrolysis or process to get them that color.

any experts got the low down?

Hi George,

I asked because a few weeks I bought a used upper mast part, that is sprayed in white colour. The spraying was done by the original out-of-the-box-boat-builder PSE in Cornwall/UK. The spar originally came with a PSE-Laser No. 132xxx (~ end of the 80ties). The baviour of that spar is not different to the silver-ones (also all from UK) that I have. So, it could have been possible that yours is also sprayed.

From here I have seen, that our big pros race with "silver"-anodized mast parts (sometimes imported from down under), but they use black anodized booms. All spars they use, are of course as new (the parts allready have the red Lasersticker).

You can always get them anodized by a local shop yourself, then you can get them in almost any colour, black, blue, yellow, red......

haha, now THAT is a good idea

then start a rumour that the new red spars from south america are just as bendy as radial ones

I'd be wary of carbon fibre top sections. Some other classes here have tried them - generally boats that have a lot of pressure on their top-sections, and I've heard of many cases of them breaking - or rather, shattering. Just a thought. :)

they're testing the carbon top sections at the moment for that very reason.

havent broken any yet and they're pushing them harder than they would normally be pushed

and the alum ones they're replacing arent exactly reliable

a kid named luke lawrence who sails locally near me bought his boat from Zach Railey and it has blck spars.

If you go no the Zhik website and click on team, almost all of the laser sailors have black spars.
