Buying used, is there a Title for Capri?

I am buying a used boat for cash. I have seen a draft bill of sale but should I also expect to get the Title papers to go with the boat? Any advice?

Not in Colorado -

Here in Colorado, boats are not titled. Only their trailers.

Which is nice, because the trailer is valued at MUCH less than the boat, which saves on taxes. Nevermind the fact that boat isn't worth much without a trailer - they don't care about that...

Not sure how boats are handled in GA.

It all depends on the state you live in. Ohio requires that you have a title. If your state does not require a title work up a bill of sale and have it notorized for your safety and records. Good luck with your new purchase.

If you are in Georgia, I believe it is similar to here in Tennessee where there is no title, just registration. If you are buying and registering in Georgia, then the seller should give you a notarized bill of sale and the registration card, which the seller signs. Check out "georgia.gov" and search for "buying selling boat" . Happy sailing

GA boat registration

Congrats on the boat. Here in GA you have to register your boat through the DNR. They also have an official Bill of Sale on their webpage.

I bought mine last year, and we did our own bill of sale. When I went to register through the DNR, it was a transfer. So, I had to fax in the Bill of Sale and fax in a couple of the previous owners registration card on the boat.

This link is for the Georgia DNR, it has all the registration and bill of sale information.

If you are getting a trailer along with it, you'll have to get a tag for that as well. I think I paid around $14 or so for the trailer tag, in Cherokee County.

re Capri 14.2

The boat is being delivered this Sunday. We hope to catch up with you on Altoona if it is not prohibitive to go from the public ramp to the race start. Can you give me more specific information as to where the closest public ramp is and exactly where the race start is.

Thanks, Marty

Allatoona sailing

Our next race is Saturday April 4.

Here is a link to the marina where we sail - Harbor Town Marina:
http://www.harbortownmarina.net/location.htm

The skippers meeting is 11am at the bath house in front of Dock 3. We do the typical discussions of wind and course for the day. Typically, we will do 3 races in an afternoon... depending on the wind/weather this is subject to change. Last time we did 4 races, two short races, and two longer races. We have a boat ramp in the marina, you could probably use if you are sailing with us. Remember the typical things for spending 3-4 hours out on the lake, sunblock, water, food, etc. I won't be there for the race, I'm heading to Florida for spring break sailing.

Around the corner from Harbor Town is a public day use boatramp - Galts Ferry. You will see the signs for both Galts Ferry and Harbor Town down the same road. It forks off as you approach the lake.

Try this Google Map link from Lake Arrowhead:

Boat title & registration

I am buying a used boat for cash. I have seen a draft bill of sale but should I also expect to get the Title papers to go with the boat? Any advice?

If boat has not been registered you will need the Certificate of Origin (CofO) produced by manufacturer and supplied to first purchaser to register boat with state. It is almost impossible to register in many states without the CofO from mfgr. Without CofO You would have to claim you built boat with an affidavit and witnesses.

Almost any state you wish to use boat on with any kind of motorized propulsion, even a minn kota, will require you to have boat registered to use it in it's navigable waters. Even boats under 8' with motors require registration.

You can check with your state online. Do not assume just because somebody told you it was not needed you can go out on boat with an electric motor. You get caught boat gets impounded and you get a fine for lack of registration.

I had to register mine because I used an electric motor and I use it in the oceans, rivers and lakes of CA, NV, AZ, NM, OR and FL.
