Kind Sailors

I was with some buddies today and saw a father and son trying to sail a c14, but they could not get the boat up wind. They did have a trolling motor on board and got back upwind of their starting point and then tried again. When they tried to sail again we noticed no center board down and that the jib had only one sheet going to starboard. They went mostly sideways in the ten knot breeze.

My question, I am not familiar with the c14 centerboard, did they forget to bring it or did they forget to deploy it (because it is not removable?)?

And, if I see them again do you kind sailors think I might ought to give some lessons from a sailor of 32 years or look for a bargin on a boat.

Newbies with board up

Probably had no idea what that thing in middle of boat was for.

If you watch some Utubes on sailing you can find a few dragging the anchor throught the water while attempting to reach, some trying to reach (head upwind) with jib backwinded. I guess it makes em happy. A lot are dragging propeller through water.

There's no way you can reach worth a dang with CB up. In some boats with weighed K/CB it can be downright dangerous. A lot of Potter 19's have flipped cause owner's went saiiing with keel up. Forgetfullness?

Be careful how you advise people to sail. Make it like a question. Some are sensitive to assistance. If you come on as being a know it all they will keep trying to reach w board up.

I'd ask if they'd like some help. Usually. they do. I sure wouldn't try to "get a bargain" off their situation as that would be a pretty crappy thing to do. You have sailed for 32 years, help out and make sailing fun for more people.

Offering assistance

The only thing better than receiving assistance is providing it.

I have saved and been saved, and it is common knowlege that on the water we occasionally rely on each other for safe passage.

Offering advice, and or assistance, to a distressed vessel is your duty as a sailor, and something that should have been learned during day one of your thirty two years on the water.
