Soft deck on 1991 14.2

Hello, I am new here and am thinking of buying a 1991 Mod2. The boat is pretty clean, but the deck has some issues. I can push down 1/4" to 1/2" on about 50% of the deck. You can push so far, then it stops. It seems like it is delaminating. I don't know what the construction is on the deck of a 14.2. Could moisture have gotten past the cubby-box seal and rotted the deck? Thank, Bob

Hi Bob,
Yes and no. Mine has the same cubby box and the one time the boat turtled, it took on about ten gallons into the hull. Upon closer inspection, the only place I could find where that much water could get in was around the top of the cubby box.

That said, I don't think there is any wood under the deck except a small area under the mast. I could be wrong about that - you'll have to find out from someone who can see into their cubby holes. Also, my deck flexes, too, but it seems like that is normal for my boat.

Hope this helps,
Jim

Soft Deck :-(

Hi Bob,

When you say your deck is soft, do you mean your foredeck or the main deck in the cockpit itself? If it is the cockpit, we had a forum member with similar problems with a Capri 14.2K Keel model who documented his dilemma pretty well about 6-9 months ago, though I forget his name. He posted pictures of his progress and everything, though I can no linger find it in the archives. Basically, he had to access the area under the deck through the cubby area and replace the rotten wood underneath and reglass. Seemed like quite a project. If that is where the soft deck is, I would recommend looking for another boat unless you can get a pretty good deal on this one and want to take on the project. If it is in the foredeck, that could be a delamination problem with the glass under the deck and you'd want to remove the cubby to inspect. The only real wood under there from what I remember (currently in Kuwait for six months but heading home in a few days so I can't check my boat (Mod I)) is an area directly under the mast that the mast bolts go through. Someone please correct me if you feel I've given bad "gouge" here as we call it in the Navy. Fish

Lightweight construction

I have a mod 2 boat from 1990. To repair the eye on the bow to moor it I had to remove my cubby. It wasn't easy as the previous owner must have been in there as well and silicone'd the heck out of it. Nevertheless I got it out and was definitely surprised...to make the boat as light as possible the fiberglass is very thin in spots. There is no support under the front deck. There is a piece of very thin plywood on each side of the cubby and some type of wood directly under the mast. I will upload some pictures shortly to show what I am talking about. Mine had gotten moist inside the hull and I put a fan in it to dry it out. I am thinking about shoring up the mast support and not even using the cubby but making some sort of water tight door to cover the cubby hole.

Edit: Here's my other thread with pictures of what the hull looks like inside:
As you can see there's not supports for the top deck but if you can pull your cubby out you could shore it up somehow.
