Having just purchased a 1987 capri 14.2 for harbor sailing, Im currently cleaning and figuring just how the boat is rigged. I have figured out everything with the help of this web site with the exception of the hiking straps. Ihave ordered a full new set from catalina. My question is this.... what is the bungee cord for from the transom to the block on a cam cleat in the center of the cockpit. Also, will the new straps come with a loop sewed in opne end for the rings on the same block on cam in the center of the cockpit. I have order the "book" that explains all of this, but in the mean time if I could get a decent idea of the rig I would appreciate it. I paid $750 for a 1987 in very good condition, with the exception of a missing rudder/tiller. It came with a 2.2 johnson outboard and a galvanized trailer, also in very good condition. Did I get a good deal or did I pay too much???

My C-14 is a 1994 model so it might be different than yours. Mine came with the bungee unattached but I surmised it went from the transom to the padeye on the top of the centerboard. This provides downward tension after releasing the centerboard line.

Our boat has three hiking straps - two forward and one aft of the barney post where the main sheet cleat is mounted. All three bolt to the barney post on one end and the other end is looped and fed into slotted brackets mounted on the transom and bulkhead. Mine had some wooden dowels slipped into the loops on the bottom side to keep the straps from pulling out of the slots. These were rotten and I replaced them with some aluminum dowels.

Hope this helps,
Jim

I believe the '94 and the '87 as well as my '86 model were all set up the same way. I have a bungee that is attached on one end to the centerboard and the other attaches to the padeye on the transom.

There are two hiking straps forward and one behind the barney post. I also have a bungee that comes out of plastic grommets near the front of the cockpit that goes under the hiking straps to lift them for easier access. I have stainless brackets that the straps fit through at the fore and aft and rings that attack to the barney post in the center.

It sounds as if you got a pretty good deal with your purchase. I purchased mine only a few months ago in rather good shape with trailer but no outboard for $850. Mine did come with the beaching rudder however.

Enjoy the boat as I sure have so far!

Bungee cord and hiking straps

I have a 1987 and the other guys are correct. The bungee connected to the padeye in the center of the transom should be connected to centerboard when sailing. It provides tension to keep the centerboard in the down position. One word of advice if you are sailing in shallows or beaching the boat be quick to release the bungee and raise the centerboard in shallow water or it may get stuck on the bottom. In most sailing conditions the centerboard does not need the bungee to stay down however if you capsize/turtle the bungee is key to keeping the centerboard from rolling back up into the hull.

As for your new hiking straps I just received a set from Catalina and the two forward straps will come with loop sewn in for the end that connects to the barney post in the center of the cockpit. The aft strap does not have any loops since it is screwed/bolted to the underside of the barney post. If you need any pics on how to connect them email me and I will forward them to you [[email protected]].

Finally $750 is a great price with the outboard if all that needed to be replaced was the tiller. I purchased by 1987 C14.2 4 years ago for $1000 garage kept and ready to sail but without an outboard.

Happy sailing from a fellow NJ sailor!

$$ Hiking Straps $$

New hiking straps (set of 3- 2 front and 1 rear) cost $80 shipped to my house on the east coast. very nice, cushioned, and fit perfect. It hurts to put that much out for something you may not need (light air sailor), but its there if you do need them.
